It’s that time of year again- Himalayan balsam is back 🌱

At this time of year it can be difficult to spot which saplings are baby balsam, and which are beneficial wildflowers 🌸

However, there are some key signs;
🍃 Look for slender leaves (ignore the rounded seed leaves, which are not true leaves!) with reddish leaf veins and serrated edges that grow in opposite pairs.
🌱 Take a look at the stem, which should be a reddish colour, and already feel hollow, brittle, and easy to snap.

If you’re unsure, then it best to leave any potential invasive species alone. After all, it could be a wildflower in disguise! 🌻🐝

If you’re out and about this bank holiday weekend and you spot any INNS you can easily report them using the INNS Mapper: innsmapper.org/home. You can also now record your sightings of blue-green algae at ceh.ac.uk/our-science/projects/bloomin-algae

By adding to these databases, you’ll help organisations like ours to map these problems, raise awareness of these issues and, where possible, work to eradicate them.
