Para-aortic nodes

This large soft tissue mass in the centre of
Figure comprises a coalescence of paraaortic
nodes from a seminoma surrounding the
aorta. Compression of the left ureter has caused
hydro-ureter and hydronephrosis and urine is
clearly visible in the renal pelvis. The cortex of
the left kidney is less opacified than the right,
suggesting reduced renal function on the left.
IV contrast in the aorta highlights its position in
relation to the lymph mass.

Mesothelioma

demonstrates a pleural based
thickening encasing the whole of the right
lung. There is also an associated large pleural
effusion, readily identifiable by the uniform
hypodense appearance of the pleural fluid.
There are also flecks of calcification present
within the pleura, consistent with asbestos
exposure. The right thoracic cavity has a
smaller volume than the left as the pleura has
contracted. These are typical appearances
consistent with a mesothelioma.
