✨🦋❤️ Spicebush // Lindera benzoin \\ a wonderful native woodland shrub with warming aromatics that make you think you are in another country - nutmeggy, peppery, cloves meets lemony citrus 🌿

🌼 In early spring, tiny yellow flowers burst before the leaves.
🍃 By summer, the leaves carry the lemony-spice aroma.
🍒 Nowish, in September, bright red berries glow against changing foliage.

Traditionally, the twigs and leaves have been steeped as a warming tea, and the berries can be dried and used as a spice, esp in baked goods. Pumpkin spice bush latte anyone? 🎃

I was inspired to harvest some after seeing the one and only ‘s recent post on it. Tip from her, these berries have a lot of fats, which can go rancid, so make sure you keep even the dried spice in the fridge until you use it.

Spicebush is also an important host plant for the spicebush swallowtail butterfly 🦋‼️

Shrubby, often a few grow side by side and they like to have their feet wet, growing near water. Alternate leaf pattern is important for the ID too. Lots of red berries out there you don’t want to eat- so be smart and that special blend of knowledge, caution and your nose! To ID this one.

This plant reminds us that New England rocks, and medicine and beauty live right here in our backyards too. 🌳🥰

Oh, and a little woodland bonus for all of you who actually read this and make it to the last slide- some happy for the rain, slug s*x 😂 perfectly aligned with the ceremony song i happened to be playing 🐌💙🐌 what is that magical moonstone opal they are surrounding you ask? That’s their gennies. Slugs and snails are hermaphrodites and can self-fertilise, but they do often mate. Perhaps for fun, but most likely bc self inbreeding while possible, doesn’t produce the strongest slug babies. 🙃

✨🤰✨ Holding space through the sacred seasons of pregnancy is one of my greatest joys. In the final trimester, acupuncture and cupping can bring profound comfort — easing back pain, calming a busy mind, melting tension, and helping the body prepare for birth. 🌿🤰💫

Pregnancy is not always rainbows and butterflies. Mamas to be are often excited but exhausted, swollen, hungry, sore, backed up and feeling restless while the body does its deep beautiful work. We aim to provide pockets of peace before baby arrives. Treatments are offered side-lying, so both mama and baby can truly relax while tension in the sacrum, shoulders and hips gently unwinds.

Hedgehogs!! Super surprised and stoked to find a few cutie patootie hedgehogs today. Hydnum repandum Or hydnum repand-YUM!! 🤤 these are def in my top three favorites for wild edibles, both taste and texture. 👩🏻‍🍳💋
And they are easy to safely identify with their relatively unique teeth.

Weird 🍄‍🟫 summer, I still haven’t found any black trumpets at my CT spots- but I’m already finding hedgehogs!? Slim pickings out there, we need rain!! Grateful to still find some tasty beauts today. Chicken of the woods and a few baby cinnabars too. Of course, the biggest, scrumptious hedgehog I found was growing in poison ivy so I guess the squirrels and fairies can have that one 😤 🐿️🧚
