Melody Hartzler, Pharm To Table I'm a wife, mom, pharmacist, CEO, and passionate about functional medicine! If you are on a journey towards wellness you are in the right place.

I hope that you find what you are looking for here as I share about what I’m learning in functional medicine, as well as nutritional approaches to chronic disease! I will balance that with options for mainstream “western” medicine practices as well. I will also share some of my favorite natural products and cooking gadgets! Today is a big day in the women’s health space! Finally the “black box” warning is being taken off of hormone therapy treatments. As Dr. Rachel Ruben pointed out today at the HHS news conference, this change came about because women across America spoke up and demanded change. Great job to all those who’ve advocated for this to happen. There are so many warriors in the women’s health space, so many advocates, so many pushing for more research, more knowledge, more education. Things are changing in real time, so I’m really grateful that this happened today, and I look forward to so much more happening in this space.

At the press conference today, they called for menopause to be taught in medical school curriculums, but the truth is, we need overall women’s health taught. Women are not little men, as was long thought, and therefore we need practitioners, doctors, researchers, who understand Women’s Health, doctors who understand women at midlife and beyond, and who understand how to help keep us safe and in good health. So let’s keep advocating! Let’s keep this movement going by investing in women’s health research and in educating our doctors about all aspects of women’s health.

It’s been a busy month but wanted to make sure that I didn’t miss American Pharmacists Month! Here’s to celebrating my amazing team that are working hard to make functional and integrative care accessible to more patients across the country.

I got to spend a weekend with this trailblazer group earlier this month. It’s so refreshing to be together in person, to take a pause, to focus on growing our business together, take time for self care, have fun, and most important be in community! Community is a HUGE part of the foundations of health. (We recorded a podcast on that while we were there which I think you will love! ❤️ coming soon)

Thankful they are my tribe and empowering patients to find their healing era .. ❤️

Not surprising but glad we are studying the gut-brain connection!

Soft drink consumption is linked to an increased risk of major depressive disorder and greater depressive symptom severity, mediated by changes in gut microbiota, particularly Eggerthella abundance.

Wow! I wonder what the data in adults would look like?

A study led by UC San Francisco and UC Davis has concluded that radiation from medical imaging is associated with a higher risk of blood cancers in children.

The researchers examined data from nearly 4 million children and estimated that 1 in 10 blood cancers — some 3,000 cancers in all — may be attributable to radiation exposure from medical imaging. The risk increased proportionally based on the cumulative amount of radiation the children received.

The study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), appears Sept. 17 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

“It’s crucial for clinicians to weigh the immediate benefits of imaging against potential long-term health risks and to optimize imaging protocols to minimize radiation exposure.” - Diana Miglioretti, UC Davis Health

✨ Oat fiber & PFAS ✨

PFAS, also called “forever chemicals,” are human-made substances used in nonstick pans, water-resistant clothing, food packaging, and many everyday products. They can stay in the body for years.

In a Canadian clinical trial, 72 men with elevated LDL cholesterol were randomized to receive either:
👉 Oat β-glucan fiber, 1 gram taken three times daily right before meals (≈3 g/day)
👉 Control, brown rice powder

Nearly everyone had detectable PFAS at baseline (including PFOA, PFOS, and newer chemicals like GenX). After four weeks, both groups had some decline in total PFAS, but only the oat β-glucan group showed a significant reduction in the long-chain PFAS of greatest concern (especially PFOA and PFOS). Certain short-chain PFAS were associated with higher liver enzyme levels at baseline, suggesting possible liver stress.

Why it matters: This study suggests that soluble, gel-forming fibers like oat β-glucan may influence how these chemicals are processed in the body.

Note: This was a short pilot study. More research is needed to understand long-term effects.

I talk a lot about ferritin and SO many people are lower than 45! Getting their levels up is so important in thyroid patients and patients with fatigue.

The American Gastroenterological Association's 2020 guidelines increased the diagnostic serum ferritin threshold from 15 ng/mL to 45 ng/mL, raising the estimated prevalence of iron deficiency among US adults by 3.3 million.
