4 Years since this photo was taken at our very first TEDxHayfield event at the Royal Hotel, Hayfield. We had 4 fantastic speakers that evening, covering topics such educational leadership, the psychology of how to shape your own environment, whether planting millions of trees is the solution to the climate crisis and how to get better sleep. Since this talk one of our speakers (Holly Hartley) sadly lost her battle with cancer.
You can still view the inspiring talks on our website at:

In clinical practice, we are beginning to see musculoskeletal problems related to the use of weight loss drugs, including muscle loss and decreasing balance. Some patients are reporting reporting feeling weaker and more unsteady than before.

This may be an early glimpse of a wider trend. Rapid fat loss can accelerate muscle and bone loss, leading to sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) and osteopenia/osteoporosis (loss of bone density).

When these occur together, we call it osteosarcopenia — a condition that significantly raises the risk of falls, fractures, and frailty, particularly in postmenopausal women. Hip fractures already carry a 30% one-year mortality rate and cost the NHS millions annually.

Even more concerning, if weight is regained after stopping medication, the returning mass is often fat, not muscle, leaving patients with sarcopenic obesity — weaker, frailer, and metabolically worse off than before.

Resistance exercise is not optional — it’s essential.

Regular muscle-loading activity should be a cornerstone of all weight-loss and maintenance plans to preserve strength, balance, and bone density.
