I am a counsellor who places the will and the spirit of my clients at the heart of my practice. My goal is to help you empower yourself so that you can get the most out of your life. I imagine you’re looking for therapy because you're in a difficult place at the moment. Perhaps you are feeling stuck, and you don’t feel able to move forward with your life without some help. Perhaps you are stuck in depression or anxiety, or are having trouble with the relationships in your life. Together we can bring you a clearer perspective on your situation, and work out why you are where you are today. We can help you get in touch with what you want in your life, so you can see how to move forward into a new chapter. I have 10 years experience working in mental health, with young people and adults with a wide range of complex needs. I have also worked as a professional musician throughout my adult life, so I also bring my own exploration of the creative journey to my work as a counsellor.

This wonderful (albeit gendered) poem by William Blake shows us how holding on to something as precious and delicate as joy can kill. It's as though it were a little damsel fly and we were crushing it with our hands in an attempt to keep it forever. But if we can "kiss the joy as it flies" and enjoy it briefly while it is there of it's own choice, allowing it to move freely, then we can live in "Eternity's sunrise". The last two words of the poem are as powerful as they are enigmatic. Blake suggests that if we let our love be free, then we will live in a never-ending sunrise. As a Christian Mystic I believe Blake would have been alluding to a union with God consciousness. So it seems to me that he is saying that to love freely and openly, and be truly prepared to let our love go at any moment, even through death itself - this is the highest of all states of consciousness.

How do we love one another without sticking ourselves together so fast that it's painful to pull away? You could argue that Khalil Gibran is warning us against codependency here. When we surrender our own agency too much, then it can create problems in our relationships. It's so important that we look after ourselves in order that we stay healthy and vital for our partners. That will likely mean space and time away from them, so you can do what YOU want to do that makes YOU happy. When we bond ourselves together too fast then it can lead to separation anxiety and resentment if our partner fails to meet our expectations of constant togetherness. Instead, when we allow love to flow like the tide with its inward and outward movements, coming and going in its intensity yet always returning, then it can become a beautiful, powerful and life-sustaining thing.
"The pillars of the temple stand apart, and the oak tree grows not in the Cypress's shade." Gibran goes on to say in the same verse of The Prophet, one of my favourite books.

It's easy enough to say 'I love you' but that's not enough on its own - although love can be felt, it is far more than just a feeling. 'Love is a verb, loving is a doing word' sings Elizabeth Fraser in Massive Attack's song Teardrop. Well this quote from bell hooks shows us just how much we have to do to demonstrate our love!
Caring for someone is the act of nurturing them and looking after them, and commitment is doing this consistently over time. Knowledge of your partner is essential to making them feel seen and understood. To love somebody is to respect them - if you do not respect them, then you are not loving them. To love someone is to take on responsibility, for love demands our growth and maturity. And to really gain someone's trust, so that they allow you into the most intimate parts of their soul - this takes gentleness, vulnerability and immense patience!
This and so much more is all contained in that tiny little word 'love'. No wonder then that it takes a lifetime (or maybe more) to learn! ❤️
