Duke University conducted a study on “Peace of Mind”. Here are some of the things it found that are necessary to have peace and happiness:
1. Don’t hold a grudge.
2. Let go of the past failures and mistakes (no guilt)
3. Don’t waste time obsessing over things you can’t change. Change those things that you can and accept the things you can’t.
4. Continue to socialize with others even when times are difficult Avoid isolating yourself.
5. Avoid Self-pity. Accept that we all go through difficulties. It’s a part of life.

Denial is a technique we use to help us avoid painful feelings or areas in our life that we don’t want to admit. Denial is sometimes needed when the initial pain is too overwhelming and so we use denial to psychologically regulate the painful feelings we actually feel to more manageable levels for the given time. We can use denial consciously or unconsciously.

Robin Williams along with so many others struggle with depression. It’s often a silent killer and impacts individuals despite their gender, race, religion and socio-economic status. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 8% of the population has diagnosable depression. In 2012, an estimated 16 million adults aged 18 or over in the US had at least one major depressive episode in this past year. This represents 6.9 of all US adults (National Institute of Mental Health). This doesn’t include statistics on children and teens.

Isaiah Austin and his family demonstrate faith in God and the right attitude. "When God closes one door, he opens another," Austin said. "I feel like he's opening another. It's just another part of my life I have to work through. I'm going to be the happy person I am, and not let anything get in my way."

Isaiah Austin, a basketball player for Baylor University who was expected to be drafted in this week’s NBA draft but his dreams came to a halt b/c he was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome. Apart from the physical complexities of this condition he now has to cope with the emotional distress of physical limitations and the sudden onset of now being labled as “disabled” and all that encompasses psychologically and socially. You can hear the devastation in his voice. As an individual with Marfan syndrome I can empathize, and as a professional counselor who has counseled several individuals with various disabilities I would say, at this point allow yourself to grieve. It’s a normal process after receiving traumatic life changing news such as this. In addition, don’t allow your disability to define you. Eventually you will strive for other goals in your life that you could physically perform bringing you the excitement and emotional fulfillment that playing basketball brought you.
