What can PT do for you? Story #2

A patient came to therapy as their last hope for chronic intense headaches that were impacting work and quality of life at home.

Week one of PT, 1 Headache that week (her norm was 5 days of headaches a week). Week 2-3 of therapy, 1 headache.

She is now headache free. When she feels on coming on she begins her postural exercises and it keeps symptoms at bay.

Her family has said she has changed-- she's happier now. :)

I want people to know what PT can do. Over the next few days I am going to share some stories that might help show you.

Years ago I met a 80+ year old patient who came into therapy per her doc due to hip pain. When asked what she wanted "to be able to do" she replied she likes swim with her friends but can no longer put her underwear on without getting it all wet. The reason was limited hip mobility and strength due to arthritis.

Imagine loving your exercise time with friends, and imagine the humiliation of wet pants leaving the pool each day...

And you know what? She met her goal before discharge!

An important part of PT is learning how to reverse your pain cycle. If your pain returns-- you'll have the tools to get back on track quickly!

Fore example: morning low back pain? Before you jump out of bed, start with gentle movement. While on your back, bend your knees and move your them side to side, then rock your pelvis front to back.

Did you know that correcting low back pain by wearing a back brace isn't the solution? Strengthening your deep core and back muscles as well as working on your posture is key.

Did you know signs and symptoms of "whiplash" from a car accident may not show up for a few days after the accident? Be on the look out for headaches, nausea, vision changes, neck and shoulder pain. Your MD can decide if an Xray or MRI is appropriate, and your PT can address your whiplash symptoms. Get help sooner rather than later!

In response to this Sunday's Boston Globe article title Navigating Physical Therapy"...

Did you know that applying moist heat or ice to an injury site can help with pain? Many physical therapist apply these to patients at the start or end of therapy.

Is it true you can apply heat or ice at home? Yes it's true, however ask your therapist if they are charging your insurance for this mode of pain relief as more often than not, they are not charging.
