UNDERSTANDING OVARIAN CYSTS.

Ovarian cysts are common and often develop during the childbearing years. They are fluid-filled sacs that form in or on the ovaries, and many women may not notice any symptoms at all.

In some cases, women may experience pelvic pain, a feeling of fullness in the abdomen, or bloating. These symptoms can have different causes and should be assessed by a medical professional.

Sudden or severe pelvic pain, pain with fever or vomiting, or feelings of weakness or light-headedness should be treated as medical emergencies.

Regular gynaecological check-ups help identify concerns early and guide appropriate care. The gynaecological clinic operates 8 am - 5 pm every Tuesday & Thursday.

For more information, please call 0771968399.

This information is provided for general health awareness and does not replace consultation with a qualified healthcare provider.

Why do patients skip life-saving surgeries?
At Kyabirwa Surgical Centre, nearly half of the scheduled ambulatory appendectomy patients failed to appear.

The reasons? Fear of surgery, transport challenges, and cost concerns.
This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a wake-up call. Every missed surgery is a risk of complications, even death.

What can we do?
1. Improve patient counselling to address fear.
2. Offer transport support for rural patients.
3. Make costs clear and affordable.

Waking up several times at night to urinate, weak urine flow, feeling like your bladder never empties?
Many men dismiss these signs, but they often point to prostate enlargement. Get checked early. Treatment is easier when the problem is caught early. The Urology Clinic at Kyabirwa Surgical Center is open every Tuesday & Wednesday.

At the 5th AGM/Symposium of the Society of Uganda Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, Dr Joseph Damoi explained that Global Surgical Initiatives/ Kyabirwa Surgical Centre has introduced one of Uganda’s first microwave ablation systems, positioning the facility to manage selected liver tumours using minimally invasive techniques.

He noted that microwave ablation uses controlled electromagnetic energy to heat and destroy tumour tissue, particularly lesions up to 3–5 cm. Dr Damoi emphasised that global trials now show comparable survival outcomes between ablation and surgical resection for small tumours, but with fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times.

He highlighted that KSC is still in their early stage of experience with microwave ablation, with less than 10 patients treated so far, adding that the method is especially valuable for patients who cannot undergo major surgery or those under surveillance for recurrent disease. cc The Mount Sinai Hospital Busoga Health Forum American Heart Association Ministry of Health- Uganda
