Bear in Mind

Bear in Mind Bear in Mind Psychology is a small business creating resources to make minds make sense.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I keep the text brief and the illustrations symbolic. Bear in Mind Psychology resources are created by Sapphire, a UK-based Clinical Psychologist specialising in work with adults who struggle with big emotions and/or traumatic childhood experiences.

Introducing Bearable; my children's emotional literacy cards. With a simple illustration and emotion word on the front and a bit more detail on the back. Why did I make these? Well, because there are consequences for adults who never learned to understand and express how they are feeling, so getting started early with a strong emotional vocabulary can only help!

*NEW*
Add-on Modes pack 3 is now available in my Etsy shop (link in bio). This is a fab little booster, adding 20 cards and two NEW MODE CATEGORIES! Find Coping Child and Repetitive Unproductive Thinking cards inside along with all the usual suspects. By popular demand, there is also now an Abused Child, separated out from Abandoned, and a Detached Self-Stimulator.

Over the next couple of months I will be creating one more Mode add-on pack, and adding four cards to the Schema collection to better reflect popular measures.

I hope they're helpful!

I think for many people who don't have big, loud, emotions, things like self-harm and substance use make very little sense and can be bewildering, upsetting, or even infuriating.

The problem is, they work. They're a terrible, terrible idea because you need to do more harm to yourself over time to achieve the same relief, but they do offer that when nothing else seems to. And that's why people keep using them. And that is also why any treatment needs to both improve the person's quality of life so they don't need to keep escaping emotional pain in this way, and teach them better ways of managing their emotions.

It is possible (and a much better idea!) to learn new, healthy strategies for painfully loud emotions, but most people need help to do this.

Does this make sense to you? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Borderline Personality Disorder is characterised by extremely loud emotions. So loud in fact, that they make it difficult to think and are so painful that individuals just want ro escape them. Here's a little about what that looks like. Part 2 will be on the way soon.

As some of you may know, I've worked at a Personality Disorder Service for the past six years. This is such a misunderstood and stigmatised diagnosis, as well as having a bloody awful name which does not help at all. Worse still, Google is a mine of blame and misinformation. So I thought I'd share a bit from my clinical experience.

Please ignore the bo****ks on Google. People who end up with these diagnoses have often had worse times than you could even imagine and are doing what they can to survive. Let's stop punishing people for not knowing what on Earth to do with their deafening emotions.

Please SHARE with others if this is useful and check back for more!
