❄️ ♥️ ‼️ With another major snowstorm headed toward Lyme, we want everyone to stay safe while clearing driveways and walkways. Snow shoveling may look harmless but it can put serious strain on your heart, especially in freezing temperatures.
🧣🧤Before you head outside, remember to dress warm and:
• Take frequent breaks — don’t push through exhaustion
• Avoid heavy meals before or right after shoveling
• Use a smaller shovel or consider a snow blower
• Know the warning signs of a heart attack: chest discomfort, shortness of breath, nausea, lightheadedness and listen to your body
• Do not drink alcohol before or after shoveling
• If you have a medical condition, talk with your doctor first
• Watch for signs of hypothermia: shivering, confusion, numbness
Cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict, your heart rate to rise, and your blood pressure to increase all while you’re lifting heavy, wet snow. That combination can be dangerous.
🛑 If something doesn’t feel right, stop immediately and call 911.
