You period can be an amazing insight into your overall health.

When I say the *quality* of your period, I mean:

🩸How long is your period?
🩸Is it heavy?
🩸Is it light?
🩸Do you experience spotting?
🩸What Colour is your period blood?
🩸Are there clots larger than a size of a nickel?
🩸Is it painful?

These stats matter. Why?

They have the ability to tell you if there is an imbalance, if stress is present, a bleeding disorder, a thyroid concern, or inflammation.

Having an understanding of your own period, and your norm, AND being able to articulate and advocate for your menstrual health is called:

A few days ago I posted some specifics on PMDD:

- What PMDD is
- How it is diagnosed
- Common signs and symptoms

(If you haven't had a chance to scope it out, I highly recommend!)

While this can feel like a lot of information, especially if you have been diagnosed with PMDD, or you have a sneaky suspicion you might have it, I'm here to tell you that you have more control over these symptoms than you think.

Most of these symptoms can be reduced by lifestyle and nutrition changes.

Traditional medicine would recommend treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). This is essentially an antidepressant to treat the mood concerns with PMDD.

Here are 5 areas to get started if you are struggling with PMDD:

1️⃣Reduce inflammation: This coulf look like - reducing inflammatory vegetable oil intake, reducing or eliminating foods you are sensitive to, managing your stress, lowering alcohol consumption, opting for a whole foods diet a majority of the time.

2️⃣Stabilize your blood sugar. Eating a well rounded meal that includes protein,
carbs and healthy fats, eating within an hour of waking, not eating sweets on their own.

3️⃣Prioritizing 7-9 hours of sleep. Ensuring your circadian rhthym is supported has a profound impact on your mood, hormones and appetite. Opt to sleep in a coold, dark room, with no electronic an hour within bed time.

4️⃣Manage your stress consistently. When you cortisol is elevated continuously, it will deplete essential vitamins and minerals, and take priority over other bodily functions. Elevated cortisol will also increase inflammation. This could look like nature walks, deep breathing, taking a long bath with magnesium salts, therapy, or yoga.

5️⃣include magnesium and vitamin B6 in your routine. This can be with foods
and supplements. This will help with the mood aspect of PMDD.

Here’s the thing, ovulation is the star of the show - PERIOD.

Ovulation is considered our 5th vital sign. It is an indicator of our overall health✨

If you are not ovulating each cycle, it is an indication that there could be a deeper issue that requires your attention. It also means that there are specific hormones that are being produced in adequate amounts, and *conversations* between your brain and your ovaries that may not be happening.

The truth? Waking up without an appetite is NOT a good thing.

If you aren’t hungry within the first hour of waking, this can be a clear indicator that you are running on stress hormones!

When you are in a chronically stressed state, your body prioritizes other bodily functions (bye bye hunger, digestion, and reproductive health).

The consequence of not eating a protein rich breakfast within an hour of waking has a domino effect!

Skipping breakfast will effect your blood sugar regulation, leaves you deficient in the nutrients required for easier periods, and can be hard on your adrenals.

If this sounds like you, I recommend starting small with breakfast.

I know it can be hard to eat when you’re not hungry, but it’s a sign from your body that you need support.

Do you experience period pain?

Let me guess…
🩸Your cabinets are full of Advil and midol
🩸Sometimes you spend hours or even days curled up in a ball with pain
🩸You reach for w**d or alcohol to make the pain *better*

Well…you’re not alone.
Period pain is SO COMMON, but it is not normal.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Ultimately, the goal is have less period pain and prostaglandins floating around long-term.

In order to do this, 2 of the biggest things to focus on are
👉🏻Lowering inflammation
👉🏻Balancing your blood sugar

Here are a few ways you can do this:
✨don’t skip meals! Eat a protein and healthy fat rich breakfast within an hour of waking!
✨ensure you’re eating every 3-4 hours
✨Focus on a nutrient dense diet rich in protein, complex carbs, fiber, and healthy fat
✨Prioritize managing your stress on a daily/weekly basis. This could look like: breathing exercises, meditation, exercise, adequate sleeps, journaling, taking a bath etc.
✨Avoid processed foods

Period pain does not have to be your reality.

There isn’t a magic pill that will make your pain disappear long-term!

You have the power to make lifestyle changes right away♥️
