What can you expect if you decide to freeze your eggs?

Step 1: Baseline ultrasound and labs. At the beginning of your menstrual cycle (or shortly after stopping birth control pills) you will come to the office for an ultrasound and blood tests. During the ultrasound, we will count the follicles in your ovaries and and look for any ovarian cysts. The blood tests will check your hormone levels and make sure you are ready to start.

Step 2: If your baseline looks good, the team will contact you and let you know to start the stimulation medications. These medications are given using a small needle just under the skin. Most women can do the injections themselves, but you can also ask a friend to help you (at least for that first shot!).

Step 3: Ultrasound and lab monitoring. After starting your stimulation medications, you’ll come into the office every few days for monitoring. Initially these visits might be spaced out, but towards the end you may need to come in every day. The monitoring is usually done early in the morning before work and includes an ultrasound and blood work. We hope to see that your follicles are growing at each visit and that your estrogen is increasing. The team will send you messages or call you with any dose adjustments to your medications based on your results. On average, most women take the stimulation medications for 9-13 days.

Step 4: Trigger. Once your follicles are large we will tell you to take your trigger shot. The trigger shot gets your eggs ready for retrieval. It’s super important that you take this shot at the instructed time!

Step 5: Egg Retrieval. On the day of the egg retrieval, you’ll be seen in a procedure area and have an IV placed. An anesthesiologist will give you sedation to make you fall asleep and the retrieval procedure takes about 20 minutes. We’ll tell you the number of eggs we got that day! Once you’ve recovered from anesthesia, you can go home and rest. Be sure to have someone who can drive you home.

Hope this little summary helps answer questions about what this process involves.

How do you know when you have enough eggs frozen?

There’s no number of eggs that will absolutely guarantee you a baby in the future. But, to get an idea of how many frozen eggs you should have, I recommend visiting the Brigham and Women’s Egg Freezing Counseling Tool.

The calculator will tell you, based on the number of eggs frozen and your age, the likelihood of delivering one, two, or three babies in the future.

For example, a 35yo who freezes 15 eggs has an 83% chance of one baby, 50% chance of two babies, and 22% chance of three babies from those eggs.
