She’s back in the kitchen again! 👩🏽‍🍳 This time, I’m making my favorite dish that is perfect for the season and a great way to reset the digestive system!

This dish has been a practice of mine ever since 2007 when I did my first with my Teacher 🙏🏾

For those unfamiliar, is the sister science to yoga and a great way to understand and care for your body based on your individual and unique (i know, a lot of information coming in hot!)

If you want more posts about Ayurveda, just type DOSHA in the comments. In the meantime, here’s the recipe I used by Dr. Vasant Lad.

Kitchari Recipe:

1 cup mung dal (split yellow)
6 cups (approx.) water
1/2 to 1 inch ginger root, chopped or grated
A bit of mineral salt (1/4 tsp. or so)
2 tsp. ghee
1/2 tsp. coriander powder
1/2 tsp. cumin powder
1/2 tsp. whole cumin seeds
1/2 tsp. mustard seeds
1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
Handful of fresh cilantro leaves
1 and 1/2 cups assorted vegetables (optional)

Alright, I want in… So here we go.
I think achievement may be one of my trauma responses honestly. I learned at a young age that if i work hard, follow the rules, i will succeed. Somewhere along the way, i lost sight of what success meant to me. Did it mean making other people happy? Or, did it mean honoring the loudest parts of me that i fought to keep hidden and quiet.

Deciding to not pursue academia after earning my PhD was one of the most frightening decisions i’ve ever made. i wondered what my peers/professors would think, even loved ones who didn’t understand why i would “just teach yoga” with multiple degrees. the bigger learning for me in this——y’all it’s harsh, but nobody cares. so with that, use this one life we receive to lean into whatever makes who you are at your core, shine.

Regardless of what I’ve internalized, how polished i may seem, i fight everyday to reject this urge to please everyone but myself at the expense of myself. i have no regrets for the path i took instead of the one that was assumed.

i love this trend. it celebrates all of who we are and the road that got us here.

what is something that’s happened in your life that completely changed because of your courage?

While I am not a licensed therapist or medical doctor, I do have first hand experience in seasonal depression. Additionally, the somatic + yoga training I have received has always been (shout out to my friend and Teacher ) — my personal experiences are what led me to my yoga practice and eventually what led me to teach.

These tips are simple. Something you can begin to integrate right now. If you only take one thing away from this, remember CONNECTION is key. 🙏🏾

tip 2️⃣ is legit for letting go and clearing paths 🗑️
honestly, as simple as these steps may seem, it’s a great way to rewire your mind into new habits and routines if you’re looking for shifts.

i often observe my own 3 year old and how the small habits and routines he experiences are building the blocks of his reality. we aren’t any different as we age. it’s when we forget this fact that we usually find ourselves in patterns that don’t serve us.

what are some small changes you’ve made that have unlocked and rewired your perspective?

The remedy for burnout? Sometimes simply taking a deep breath, assessing your capacity, and opening your heart to saying NO with all love + respect.

I have experienced burnout before, and I ain’t going back. Here is a simple practice to {re}claim your time— especially as the holidays hit.

This is not a drill 🚨 Vibe & Flow: My Mixtape featuring is coming next month!

Vibe & Flow was created to remind us that everyone belongs on the yoga mat. The intention has always been that of oneness, but most of all an opportunity to give something a try that you may never ever have considered. This is why I invite my friends and colleagues in to practice with me.

We are ending out the year strong with THEE OG JENN SHERMAN ✨✨✨✨

see you on the mat!

Stretches that will prepare your body for yoga 🧘🏽‍♀️

1️⃣ Seated figure four is a great way to open the IT band and hips in an intentional way that makes space for longer holds.
2️⃣ Hamstring stretches with blocks —— great way to gently and responsibly settle into the hamstrings for a full split aka
3️⃣ Arm and shoulder stretches are a must to prepare the upper body (specifically traps) for a longer hold in eagle arms.

Tell me: What yoga postures freak you out or leave you feeling overwhelmed? I’ll show you their stretch cousin!

i don’t know where i’d be without my practice. 🧘🏽‍♀️😮‍💨

yogis are not passive human beings, yogis are grounded and rooted with a power within that has the potential to be stronger than you ever imagined.

i often say, the loudest voice in the room is not always the strongest. in other words, just because your workout or “work in” doesn’t seem loud, doesn’t mean it’s not impactful. When i think about becoming aware of the wisdom that my body holds, I make an agreement with myself that yoga and meditation serves this purpose. i also make the agreement that this is the practice where I will be radically honest with myself— honest about how i feel and what I am experiencing.

moral of the story….yogis are anything but passive.

this is your morning, you get to decide.

your meditation does not have to be super complicated. it can be as simple as finding time to close your eyes, take some deep breaths, and get yourself anchored with a simple mantra.

oh and, repeat after me: i can meditate. i can move if i am uncomfortable. i can open my eyes if i become unsure. i am a mediator. it does not have to be perfect.

start with this one this morning. ☀️
