Congratulations The WildFlower Alliance ! A big win! The best is yet to come!

We are beyond grateful to the United Way of Central Alabama for awarding The Wildflower Alliance a grant to support and expand our Inclusive Playdates! 🎉

Today, at their grantee reception, we had the pleasure of meeting Shakeitha Tatum, Vice President of Agency Relations and Katrina Watson, Senior Vice President of Community Impact, several sponsors including Regions Bank and AmFirst, members of their advisory board, and fellow nonprofits working side-by-side to serve our community.

This grant marks an exciting new chapter for the expansion of our inclusive programming, and we cannot wait to see the impact that grows from this partnership with United Way.

It’s official! Our logo has been registered with the US Trademark office! So what? Glad you asked. Anyone wanting to do “Come Roll With Me” around the country and use this logo must include people with disabilities in the event at a minimum. People without disabilities, though well intentioned, will not be effective at educating, improving awareness and helping ensure the realization of the human rights people with disabilities already have!

It will be a busy fall with two workshops on campus at UAB in September, currently scheduling events for school-age kids, and excited about the fifth annual event with UAB school of medicine in November. We continue to have events with the residency programs at UAB and had three successful events this spring!

Tip of the day : if you see someone in a community who might need a little help, don’t hesitate to ask and let THEM tell you how to help. If they don’t need help, don’t take offense.

Make it a great Friday !

Here’s The Story

My name is Cathy Carver. I am a physical therapist who works with people with long term mobility deficits that require them to use custom wheelchairs - power wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs. My desire is to connect the able-bodied community to the disabled community and bridge gaps in communication, appreciation, and respect for how we all do life. Some do it on feet, some do it on wheels. The big goal is to have this program “packaged” so that other therapists could take the structure and adapt it to their area and culture and do something similar. If we can get to kids before prejudices and judgments get too deeply rooted, then we can learn to appreciate how people do life even if they are different from them...who knows, these kids may acquire a disability someday and they will remember that they too can find a way by having met people who didn’t let their disability define them. So, “Come Roll With Me!” If you want to get “rolling” in your community, head over to our website (https://sites.uab.edu/comerollwithme/) and we’ll find a way.

Let’s roll!

- Cathy
