Juneteenth is a holiday which celebrates our African American ancestors, what they went through, how they overcame. My ancestor, Estes Howard founded Emancipation Day in Albion, Michigan in the early 1900s as a way to commemorate Black survival and gather together Black people in a demonstration of Black excellence.

Many of the people in the photo above are my ancestors who celebrated Emancipation Day in 1927. They were beautiful and successful people who were proud of who they were. On Juneteenth every year we now celebrate what it means to have survived the horrors of slavery and lynching. We celebrate what it means to survive the anti-Black, Klan, and police terrorism that we have been subjected to for centuries in America. We celebrate our ability it survive the circus regime currently in office. As African Americans we have always survived with wit and grace and community. Props and praises to the ancestors who made our lives possible! Ashe Aho.

I have been busy doing lots of public speaking and poetry performance on a mini speaking tour of sorts. I gave a keynote on Spiritual Activism at the 8th Annual Ethnic Studies conference at CalState, Stanislaus. I then performed poetry at Glide Memorial church in San Francisco. I also performed poetry at an Earth Day event organized by the Feminist Uprising in Long Beach and was a featured poet at Libros bookstore in Lincoln Heights, CA. I then guest lectured about my book, Sovereign Wisdom and my film, (Re)Counting (Wo)Man in a religious studies graduate course at CalState, Long Beach. Finally, I gave a short talk on Indigenous conceptions of peace on an interfaith panel in the Religious Studies at CSLB.

I love public speaking and performance and am enjoying all of these invitations.

TODAY on earth day, let’s celebrate by calling for the City of Long Beach to stop doing business with a misogynist transphobic raycist N**i.

Let’s get Space X out of our city!

Come join us at this peaceful gathering where we will have music, poetry, and speeches about Mother Earth, pass out seeds, and information and gather to make public comments at City Hall.

Let’s stand up for the world we want to live in. Let’s protect Mother Earth and the oceans from the pollution that comes with rocket 🚀 launches and recovery. Let’s protect the elders from attacks on social security. Let’s protect the women, the g**s and the theys from this authoritarian regime by boycotting all things Leon. Let’s raise our voices, grow flowers for the bees, share information about herbal health for women’s reproductive health, start mutual aid societies, start urban gardens, march and protest and strike until the world we are envisioning is a reality.

I will be reading a poem at the event. Let’s gather together and unite our vision.
