May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚 This year, Mental Health America introduces the theme More Good Days Together, emphasizing accessible, evidence-based approaches to self-care and overall wellness.

As part of this initiative, they developed a series of affirmations designed to support positive self-perception and well-being. Research indicates that self-affirmations can enhance overall and social well-being while reducing psychological barriers, with both immediate and lasting effects. We want to encourage everyone to take some time for themselves during this month, while building skills that help regulate and maintain ourselves individually and as a community. ✨ We invite you to share in the comments which affirmation resonated with you most. 🔗 Additional resources are available at the link in our bio.

🌍 Together, small, intentional practices can contribute to meaningful improvements in mental health and well-being. 💚

On Denim Day, we stand in solidarity with survivors while also acknowledging the psychological and societal impact of victim-blaming narratives.

Research consistently shows that r**e myths—such as the belief that clothing implies consent—remain prevalent and contribute to increased survivor self-blame, stigma, and barriers to disclosure (Grubb & Turner, 2012; Ullman, 2010).

From a psychological perspective, these narratives are not harmless—they shape how survivors understand their experiences and whether they feel safe seeking support. Survivors of sexual violence are at elevated risk for mental health concerns, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, and Anxiety, with outcomes strongly influenced by the responses they receive from others (Campbell et al., 2009).

Affirmative consent frameworks—emphasizing clear, mutual, and ongoing agreement—have been shown to improve understanding of consent and reduce harmful ambiguity (Jozkowski & Peterson, 2013).

At the Illinois Psychological Association, we are committed to advancing trauma-informed care, challenging misinformation, and supporting survivors with dignity and respect.

💙 Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, we stand with the autism community in celebrating neurodiversity and advocating for understanding, inclusion, and acceptance.

At IPA, we believe that every individual brings unique strengths, perspectives, and value to our world. Let’s continue to learn and create spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered.

‼️The recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Chiles v. Salazar struck down Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy for minors, a practice that is widely discredited and deeply harmful. Conversion therapy places young people at serious risk of psychological trauma, shame, and lasting emotional harm.

📣 We want to be clear: in Illinois, the law remains strong. Conversion therapy for minors is illegal and is considered both consumer fraud and professional misconduct. Providers who engage in this practice face serious professional consequences.

🏳️‍🌈 To all LGBTQ+ youth and families in our state: you are protected. Your safety, dignity, and right to be affirmed are not negotiable. You deserve care that celebrates who you are and not attempts to change you.

💡 As psychologists, we remain committed to supporting and advocating for affirming, evidence-based care that uplifts and empowers young people. Together, we can continue to fight for spaces where LGBTQ+ youth are safe, respected, and valued.
