The Nuremberg laws were passed in 1935. These laws stripped German Jews of citizenship and specifically identified who was Jewish and who was A***n. Let’s consider the effect of these laws on children.

Children were labeled officially as German, Jew, or Mischling (mixed). Children were expected to know their status, and their schools, clubs, and doctor’s offices required documentation. The very nature of childhood itself became defined by race.

The Law for the Protection of German Blood and Honor criminalized relationships between Jews and non-Jews overnight. For children, this meant that best friends were no longer allowed to speak to one another. For Jewish children there were no more invitations to birthday parties or participation in clubs and organizations. Public parks, pools, and libraries were forbidden, and teachers segregated and humiliated Jewish children in the classroom. Just imagine the confusion and anxiety this created for young kids.

It got worse, of course. In 1938, Jewish children were forbidden to attend German schools entirely. As a consequence, Jewish schools were hastily set up, but all sense of the future was altered. It was clear to Jewish children that even if they could receive an education, they were forbidden to become doctors, lawyers, or teachers.

Deportations of Jewish children from Germany began in October of 1941. So for the six preceding years, they had been singled out, ostracized, surrounded by signs reading “Jews not wanted”. They had watched parents lose their jobs. They had watched homes and neighborhood shops and synagogues destroyed. They had lived with daily fear and uncertainty. What a way to grow up…

Margot Steinhardt from Berlin was one of these little people. Never forget. ❤️
