Equine Herpesvirus (EHV)

According to the Equine Disease Communication Center, EHV-1 is widespread in different areas and states.

Because EHV can spread easily and can persist on equipment or clothing, it’s still really important to be cautious.

Here is what will be done to prioritize your horses’ safety:
✓I’m disinfecting all equipment between barns / appointments.
✓I'm disinfecting/cleaning my clothes and footwear between barns to prevent cross-contamination.
✓I'm cleaning and sanitizing the inside/outside of my vehicle weekly.

How you can help & what you can ask for:
*Make sure your horse’s vaccinations are current (especially EHV).
*If your barn has a quarantine or isolation protocol let me know ahead of time.
*Monitor your horse’s health closely: check temperature daily, watch for any nasal discharge, coughing, or abnormal behavior. If anything is off, reach out to your vet immediately.

**EHV is very contagious, especially via respiratory secretions and contaminated surfaces.
**Horses can carry the virus without symptoms, so we can’t rely solely on “looking healthy.”

Chill is in the air, here are some things you can do to help your horse(s)! 🥶

ELECTROLYTES!! These will help keep your horses drinking and hydrated!

TEA! Alfalfa, Timothy, whatever you prefer really. Just add warm water! This is extra hydration along with extra fiber.

HAY! Horses keep warm by eating, so make sure there is plenty in front of them!

With new followers I wanted to introduce myself (again) and share all about Equi-First Aid South Carolina.

My name is MJ, I had a deep love for everything horse related since I was a young girl. I completed in barrel racing, speed events, obstacle course challenges and more. I became involved in educational equine events and started judging horse shows in a local 4-H. During the summers I worked at local horse farms learning different techniques and disciplines.

Throughout high school I shadowed veterinarians, I graduated college with an associate's degree in animal science. I worked as a full-time veterinary technician for 6 yrs following my graduation. I learned more about all types of animals, worked as a dental technician and surgical technician under the guidance of veterinarians.

I felt like there was more I could do and learn in the vast world of animals, so I entered into a scholarship competition, I became the winner for Equi-First Aid USA, which allowed me to become a certified equine first aid instructor. Creating my business now known as Equi-First Aid South Carolina.

I serve on several nonprofits, when I'm not running my business, furthering my education or helping a non-profit I am curled up with a book or out in nature.

If you would like to know more about the classes, I offer or how to schedule a class then send me a DM. The website is currently under construction, so it is best to reach out via DM.
