As food insecurity reaches new highs — with nearly 1 in 9 New Jersey residents struggling to get enough to eat — many are forced to put off health care. But even in hard times, breast cancer doesn’t wait. That’s why Zufall Health Outreach Representative Leonor Salgado visits places like Feeding Hands, a food access center in Somerset County, to make clients aware of free and low-cost breast cancer screenings through New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection (NJCEED). The program also offers screenings for colorectal, cervical, and prostate cancers.

If you live in Morris or Somerset counties and need help accessing an affordable screening, contact our NJCEED team for help. Getting screened today could protect your tomorrow!

Tracy Blackwell, General Manager of health care advertising agency Fingerpaint Group, recently became the newest member of the Zufall Health Foundation Board of Trustees, and we are thrilled to welcome her!

Beginning in 2022, Blackwell coordinated the agency’s generous donation of pro-bono creative services to the health center and, in 2024, its gift of a four-by-five-foot fingerpainting of Dr. Bob and Kay Zufall. After witnessing Zufall’s impact firsthand and reflecting on her other extensive service experience in Morris County, she realized she wanted to make an even deeper contribution.

Read Tracy Blackwell’s full “Why I Give” story to see how she and Fingerpaint Group are making a real difference in their neighbors' access to health care: https://www.zufallhealth.org/why-i-give-tracy-blackwell-and-fingerpaint-group-believe-health-connects-us-all/

Pink’s the color of the month! 🎀 Join the movement to raise awareness for breast cancer — it’s catching on everywhere, including at our Somerville office, which is now 100% operational again after a burst pipe caused significant water damage in July.

Most people with breast cancer have no symptoms, and regular screening is the safest way to find it early. If you live in Morris or Somerset counties and need help accessing an affordable screening, our New Jersey Cancer Education and Early Detection (NJCEED) team can help:

📞 Marla (Morris County) – 908-526-2335 ext. 1138
📞 Denise (Somerset County) – 908-526-2335 ext. 1135

Our NJCEED staff can answer questions, ease fears, and help you avoid delays when time matters most. Learn more about NJCEED at https://www.zufallhealth.org/services/medical-services/cancer-screening

Flu season is here, and it’s time for your yearly flu shot! Everyone age 6 months and older should get the vaccine. The flu spreads easily and can make people very sick, sending many to the hospital each year.

Some people may have mild side effects from the vaccine, like a sore arm, feeling tired, or a low fever. These side effects go away quickly and are much less serious than getting the flu. You may still get the flu, but the vaccine can make your illness much milder.

You can also help stop germs from spreading: wash your hands often, cover your coughs and sneezes, avoid close contact with people who are sick, wear a mask in crowded spaces, and stay home if you don’t feel well.

Schedule your vaccine appointment at Zufall today: www.bit.ly/2U4KPJi.

Even though the Zufall Health Mobile Medical is officially licensed and seeing patients, the Road for Good Health Tour keeps rolling! On Thursday, the vehicle visited our Morristown facilities, and even Mayor Tim Dougherty came by to explore its impressive interior and learn more about the importance of mobile medical care in town and beyond.

If you see the unit in your travels: Snap a pic, share it, and tag us to join the celebration of access to health care beyond our office walls!

We’re thrilled to share that the Zufall Health Mobile Medical is officially in action! 🚐💙

After a two-year process of fundraising, procurement, outfitting, and licensure, the new unit is now serving patients. Its first stop was the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP), which provides emergency housing, counseling, and other vital services for people experiencing homelessness.

Collaborations with partners like Somerville-based SHIP show how the Mobile Medical brings care to people who might otherwise struggle to reach a traditional medical setting.

Our original Highlands Health Van — now 16 years old with nearly 100,000 miles logged — is still on the road and will continue serving patients as long as possible. The new Mobile Medical will now become our primary unit and help to keep essential care on the road for many years ahead.

High cholesterol, hypertension (high blood pressure), and type 2 diabetes can all be serious if they aren’t treated. Each can lead to early death, often because of heart problems like heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. The good news is that with effective management, patients with these conditions can live longer, healthier lives.

Zufall Health is committed to reducing the impact of chronic disease, and we’re proud to be recognized once again by the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association for our achievements in this area:

🩺 Blood pressure control: More than 70% of patients with hypertension are at goal

📈 Cholesterol management: More than 70% of patients with high cholesterol are managing with statin medication

🩸 Type 2 diabetes control: Fewer than 25% of patients have blood sugar levels in the poor control range, or Hemoglobin A1c levels (average level of glucose in the bloodstream in the last 3 months) above 9%

A huge shoutout goes to our patients, who put in the hard work every day, and to our cross-functional teams—including medical providers, pharmacists, and support staff—whose coordinated efforts make these results possible.

The Zufall Health Mobile Medical’s maiden voyage around northern and central New Jersey continues! 🚐

Yesterday, as part of its Road for Good Health Tour, the vehicle stopped at our Plainsboro office, located on the campus of Penn Medicine Princeton Health. Staff, patients, and partners toured the new mobile space and learned how it will bring primary care services directly to where they’re needed most.

📸If you spot the Mobile Medical on the road, let us know! Snap a photo, share it on Facebook or Instagram, and tag Zufall Health — it’s an easy way to show your support for expanding access to care for those who can’t easily reach an office.

About 10 years ago, a graduate school clinical rotation at Zufall Health – Morristown introduced Vito Zuna, PA, to the impact of community health care. Having spent many years without health insurance after moving to the U.S. with his family at age 5, he instantly connected with his patients’ stories and gratitude.

Today, he’s a key member of the West Orange care team, supporting programs like The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey’s integrated primary care and case management program for Essex County residents age 65 and older.

An advocate for primary care, he says it’s an honor to be part of the safety net that prevents catastrophes before they happen—for people who might otherwise go without care. Read more: https://www.zufallhealth.org/meet-your-provider-vito-zuna-pa-c/
