When comparing traditional pushing positions to neutral spine pushing, we can notice a difference in the direction of force!
When curling around baby, the diaphragmatic angle is directed towards your back making pushes less effective. In addition, pulling yourself towards your legs tends to cause the shoulders to lift and directs the push upwards.
When we compare this technique to neutral spine pushing, we find that the diaphragmatic angle is directly downwards, making pushes more effective. In addition, pulling our legs to us encourages the engagement of the back and directs the force of the push downwards!
Try both of these positions and feel which seems to create more downward pressure in the perineum!
