The World Health Organization (WHO) has just released a position paper discussing transitioning to midwifery models of care and the associated benefits for women, midwives and communities overall; this paper can now be accessed online in full at https://www.who.int/news/item/16-10-2024-who-urges-expansion-of-lifesaving-midwifery-care-for-women-and-babies

Excerpt from the abstract of the paper —
“The publication, Transitioning to midwifery models of care: A global position paper, outlines the benefits and key components of midwifery care models, where midwives serve, within broader teams, as the main healthcare provider for women and babies during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

“Empowering and supporting midwives benefits women, babies and health systems,” said Dr Anshu Banerjee, Director of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health at WHO. “Expanding and investing in midwifery care represents a cost-effective and urgently needed solution to save and improve the lives of women and newborns globally.”

When a consistent team of midwives provides support through the maternity period:

👩🏻 Women are more likely to report a positive birth experience
💕 Rates of spontaneous vaginal deliveries increase
✂️ Episiotomies, c-sections and forceps use decline - indicating reductions in the use of unnecessary medical interventions
