๐ช๏ธ Typhoon Preparedness Checklist ๐
โPreparing before a typhoon hits is crucial for safety.
โจHere is a comprehensive checklist to help you get ready:
โ๐ Emergency Kit & Supplies
โAssemble and store your emergency kit in a safe, accessible, and waterproof container. Aim for a 3-7 day supply per person.
โ๏ธโWater: At least one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation.
โ๏ธโFood: Non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food (canned goods, energy bars, dried fruit, etc.).
โ๏ธโCommunication & Light:
โFlashlight and extra batteries.
โBattery-powered or hand-crank radio (preferably with NOAA Weather Radio tone alert).
โCell phone with chargers and a power bank.
โ๏ธโHealth & First Aid:
โComplete First Aid Kit.
โ2-week supply of prescription medications and eyeglasses/contact lens solution.
โNon-prescription medicines (pain relievers, antacids, etc.).
โ๏ธโSanitation items: Moist towelettes, hand sanitizer, garbage bags, and plastic ties.
โ๏ธโTools & Security:
โWrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
โManual can opener.
โWhistle to signal for help.
โDuct tape and plastic sheeting (for sheltering in place).
โ๏ธโOther Essentials:
โCash (ATMs may not work).
โCopies of important documents (insurance policies, ID, bank records) in a waterproof bag.
โBlankets or sleeping bags for each person.
โInfant formula, diapers, pet food, and supplies (if applicable).
โ๐ Home & Property Preparations
โSecure your home and surrounding property to minimize damage.
โ๏ธโOutside:
โBring inside or securely tie down anything that can be picked up by the wind (lawn furniture, potted plants, garbage cans, bicycles, etc.).
โTrim dead or weak tree branches that could fall on your home or power lines.
โClear gutters, downspouts, and drains of debris to ensure water can flow away from the structure.
โ๏ธโWindows & Doors:
โClose and secure all windows and doors.
โInstall pre-cut plywood boards or hurricane shutters over all windows if you have them.
โ๏ธโUtilities & Appliances:
โTurn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible to keep food fresh longer if the power goes out.
โTurn off propane tanks.
โUnplug small appliances.
โFill bathtubs and containers with extra water for washing/flushing, in case water service is interrupted.
โ๏ธโVehicle:
โFill your vehicle's gas tank. Gas stations may be closed or out of fuel after the storm.
โ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Family & Communication Plan
โEnsure everyone knows what to do before, during, and after the storm.
โ๏ธโEvacuation Plan:
โKnow if you live in an evacuation zone.
โDetermine and practice evacuation routes and destinations (local shelters, friend's/relative's house outside the zone).
โPlan how you will travel and arrange for pet care if pets are not allowed at shelters.
โ๏ธโContact Plan:
โEstablish an out-of-town or distant contact person whom all family members can call to check in and relay messages if local phone lines are down.
โEnsure every family member knows the contact's phone number.
โ๏ธโStay Informed:
โMonitor local news, radio, and official emergency management websites for the latest forecasts and official instructions.
โBe familiar with official warnings (e.g., typhoon/hurricane watch vs. warning).
โ๏ธโReview Insurance:
โReview your homeowner's/renter's and flood insurance policies (standard homeowner's insurance typically does not cover flood damage).
