The 4 Element Theory in Thai Traditional Medicine
📌 Traditional medicine systems around the world are all characterised by one thing: the Elementh Theory. The idea is that all things are made of earth, water,
fire and wind. By all things we mean everything frommeta, bones, dreams, desires; so not only human flesh and blood are made by these elements but also human characther,
tendecies and dispositions towards certain diseases. It is the baance and imbalance of the elements within us tat affects our emetonal and physical well-being.
📌 In Thailand, element theory is a unifying factor for the five branches of traditional Thai medicine:
1) Internal medicine (treatment of the internal body);
2) External medicine
(External application of herbs, Thai massage);
3) Spiriti Medicine (Shamanistic healing with spirits, incantations, magical amulets);
4) Divinatory sciences (Numerology, astrology, and palmistry);
5) Buddhism (which might be viewed as the mental health branch of Thai medicine. All five of these branhes incorporates Buddhist principles and element theory.
📌 In our bodies earth and water make up the flesh and the blood (Anatomy), and fire and wind are the animating forces that bring us to life (Physiology).
1️⃣ Din (Earth): Earth element dominates physical structures (bones, skin, nails, teeth and organs.
2️⃣ Naam (Water): Water element dominates all fluids, from tears to blood.
3️⃣ Fai (Fire): Fire heaths our bodies, breaks down our food, encourages transformation, and is the impetous of change.
4️⃣ Iom (Wind): The function of wind is to provide growth and vibration, and it has the experience of movement.
📌 Space, in addition, is th canvas upon which they all exist. Quantum physics has shown us what the ancients knew: that there is more space than there is matter. In Traditional medicine, space is often linked to consciousness and in Thai medicine to the study of Buddhas 5 Skhandas: form, sensation, perception, mental formation,
and consciousness.
