UCSF Fresno’s Nicklaus Brandehoff, MD, an emergency physician and medical toxicologist, is heading to Kindia, Guinea, for three weeks to treat snakebite patients at a clinic. Dr. Brandehoff expects the clinic will see four or five serious cases of snakebites a day, along with many other unique medical conditions endemic to the area. Snakes in the region include black mambas, green mambas, forest cobras, spitting cobras, gaboon vipers, rhinoceros vipers, saw-scaled vipers, puff adders, among other venomous species. Brandehoff is co-founder and co-medical director of the Asclepius Snakebite Foundation (ASF), an international nonprofit made up of a team of clinicians and scientists on a mission to reverse the tragic cycle of snakebite outcomes through research, clinical medicine, and education. More information about ASF can be found at www.snakebitefoundation.org

NATIONAL WOMEN PHYSICIANS DAY

This day marks the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States in 1849. Dr. Blackwell initiated the movement that helped women gain entry and equality in the field of medicine.
