Since qualifying as a 'Chiropodist' in 1997, I have worked in the private sector, for many years in Glasgow and now North Ayrshire where I have lived for the last 8 years. Several years back, legistlation changed making this, among other health professions, title protected. This means that all private practicioners who were not previously state registered had to apply to join the Health Professions Council register to allow them to keep using the title 'Chiropodist'. I initially joined this register but decided, for several reasons, not to renew my membership and as a result I am no longer able to use the protected title. I do however, continue to treat my current clients, and gladly welcome new ones. I continue to provide the same level of treatment and professionalism I have done for 17 years now. During this time I have gained the knowledge and experience to continue in this field on my own; not being able to use the title doesn't render me inadequate to carry out my job. Hence, the majority of my new clients come from referrals which in itself is a compliment!
