Home » Karachi PMA opposes PMDC’s condition of CME credit hours By PPI News KARACHI: Secretary General Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Centre Dr Mirza Ali Azhar on Wednesday opposed lengthy process of Continuous Medical Education (CME) credit hours, introduced by Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) for doctor’s registration and termed it unfair and tantamount to harass the medical practitioners. He expressed these views while addressing a press conference at PMA House here. President PMA Karachi Prof drees Adhi, Dr SM Qaisar Sajjad, Dr Qazi Wasiq were also present. Dr Mirza said doctors all over the country were facing problems due to the process of registration with PMDC. He said a good number of doctors sent their documents for registration but they had been pending delayed for several months. He said the registration of fresh graduates, fresh fellows of from College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and practicing doctors is being delayed without any reason. He said registration process should be made easy and no doctor should be harassed by PMDC officials through their new conditions. He said it is the responsibility of PMDC to register young graduate family physicians and specialists who are coming from other countries to serve their motherland. Dr Idrees Adhi said PMA and College of Family Medicine Pakistan (CFMP) have always demanded for organizing Continuous Medical Education (CME) programs. He said PMA and CFMP are organizing regular CME sessions, while provincial branches of PMA also hold CME programs on regular basis to educate and promote scientific thinking in medical profession. “PMDC instead of organizing a system of CME program and capacity building has suddenly started demanding CME certificates without any planning and facilitation,” he regretted. He said PMDC authorities are harassing the doctors across the country through their new method. He strongly condemned this attitude and demanded to organize a system of CME program all over country before asking for CME certificate. He said PMDC has a very important role in organizing and standardizing the medical education and training in Pakistan, but it will be only possible when the federal government takes action to form an independent, autonomous and powerful PMDC with fewer members and an effective and honest secretariat. He said all doctors in the country should attend CME program and update themselves with recent advancement in medical practice. Dr SM Qaisar Sajjad said medical students in Pakistan should receive the best possible medical education in proper medical colleges attached with teaching hospitals. He said it is a matter of deep concern that for last many years PMDC has become a council of the owners of private medical college and facilitating the recognition of sub-standard medical education in private medical colleges and is unable to regulate these medical colleges. He informed that PMA Central Councilors from all over Pakistan are meeting on 8th March 2015 at the PMA House, Karachi to discuss the issues related to PMDC and chalk out their line of action against PMDC and its poor functioning.
