WE BELIEVE IN THE MODERN RELEVANCE OF ANCIENT WISDOM
As the saying goes, “Everything old is new again.” The ways of our Ancestors offer guidance for modern problems, and blueprints for spiritual healing. Re-membering and re-memory - to use Toni Morrison’s phrasing - is crucial for our continued healing and restoration.

It can take time, practice, and even struggle to discover what works for you. Mind your manners, respect the house you find yourself in, and use what resonates. But never be afraid to create and walk a singular path - even if it seems nonsensical to everyone else.

HEALING
What happens to us does not have to permanently define us. You have the right to change your story, evolve into your fullest expression, and create space for pleasure, abundance, and bliss. Personal Power: You were born with everything you need to fulfill your purpose. Take responsibility, discover your inner Divinity, and step into your power. Self Awareness: Prioritize self-understanding: catalyze and accentuate your good; integrate and utilize your shadows. Know you, love you, be true to you.

Pleasure: We are hard-wired to expect and experience holistic pleasure; narcissism and hedonism are merely the superficial, ego-based manifestations of this. You have the inalienable right to enjoy life, engage in ecstatic experiences, and possess joy. Furthermore, if you’re in a position where your very existence is questioned, threatened, or otherwise compromised, expressing wonder and delight becomes revolutionary. Abundance: You own the power of creation and manifestation. Having the good stuff - and plenty of it - stretches far beyond the contents of your wallet. It is crucial to nurture all sources of wealth and prosperity, including creativity, love, health, integrity, empathy, and intelligence. Bliss: Exhibiting sweetness despite circumstances, an air of holistic transcendence, and enchanted self-expression creates a state of well-being far beyond happiness. Know you are worthy of this, and seek it in all things.

The Divine Feminine: The Feminine was relegated to the background and underground centuries ago, and the world’s suffered immensely ever since. Meanwhile, She’s continued to infuse Life with adaptability, sensuality, unadulterated energy, mother-love, and fecundity. She was humankind’s first God, gives physical life as Mother, and grants ecstasy as Lover. Consider us one of many contemporary harbingers of Her resurgence, revival, and restoration. Full Spectrum Womanhood: The Madonna-Whore fallacy has held sway too long, bolstered by unchecked patriarchy and kyriarchy. Women and femmes are entitled to the same depth and breadth of sexual, spiritual, and intellectual expression as all other human beings.

Part of the reason I started writing "The Singlehood Chronicles" was because I wanted to see a more diverse, layered conversation about being single / childless.

I don't disagree with the sista in the video - hell, I've come across some of those attitudes, too. But I also think that when it's presented this way, it's easier to forget that these situations are often a complicated mix of choices, circumstances, and unfulfilled dreams. Of course, nuance doesn't get much traction in environments (algorithms) primed to thrive on extremes.
Feeling like we have to show up as concretely decided, "bitter," or angry on one side or as the illuminated, all-loving, mama-wife on the other feels like the 21st century madonna/whore complex. 🙄
If we're going to heal, relate to, and love each other better, we're gonna have to get beyond the assumptions - on both sides - and see what we can learn from the different ways we manage to get through life.

Things have changed quite a bit in the 13 years since I wrote this... but Kabiyesi has granted me victory and showed love whenever he's graced me with his presence, and he ensured that I was surrounded by his children - even as Osun stepped forward to claim me.
We have the Orisa whose àṣẹ we carry... then we have those who stay nearly as close, following and shepherding us through our lives. I'll be forever grateful to Sango for all his blessings. Kawo! Oba koso!
