Here are some FUN facts about Wound Management!!
* Egyptians were the first people to use honey to heal wounds. There have been clay containers filled with honey found in the tombs in Egyptian Pyramids ! Medical honey is now a common wound healing tool. It has great anti-bacterial properties and provides just the right amount of moisture for fast wound healing.
* The Eciton burchelli ant of Central and South America have been used as a natural suture. The ant is place on the edge of the wound. The ant bites down catching the sides of the wound pulling them together. The "army" ants mandibles are "extremely sharp and easily pierce human skin". Once the ant is locked down on the wound, their bodies are removed from their heads leaving their heads to suture the wound edges together ! "A wound could have several ants heads holding it closed, like buttons on a sweater"!!! (Ripley's Believe it or Not 01/27/2020)
* 2100 BC Mesopotamians had a remedy for wound healing. The cleanser of choice was beer ! Often, after cleaning the wound with beer, they would cover the wound a bandage that had been soaked in wine and turpentine!! Guess that is one way to keep little critters away!!
* In the 1500's, gunshot wounds were treated with boiling oil!!. The goal was to inactivate the gunpowder. In 1542, a scientist, Ambroise Pare', helped end the practice of using boiling oil on gunshot wounds. He proved that using egg yolk and turpentine the wounds healed faster !
