Ginseng trade in North American and Kentucky, is as old as the founding and settling of these areas. We'd like to keep this annual, fall harvest tradition to continue on for many more generations. Our goal here to provide a place to talk about Kentucky ginseng, as well as, to foster conservation and harvest stewardship.

Sometimes you get the honor to inspect and certify pretty special roots. This one came in at just under half a pound, also one of the oldest inspected individually. Definitely the largest of the older roots that have come across our scales and counts. The root had at least 79 age scars with multiple ‘generational’ roots. Those adventitious roots came in at 26, 33, 34, 36, 47, 50, and 56 scars. The stem at the end was as big as the pick we use to assist counting. Kudos to the harvester for taking their time to carefully dig out the root without tool damage and getting the fiber. Thanks to the dealers that gave us the heads up to have the time for a detailed inspection and letting the office staff catch a glance. It sure is something to talk about!

Sustainable, legal harvest means looking for mature roots before removing from soil, after berries have ripened, and in season.

What’s your ginseng story?

What’s your ginseng story?

In many states across the Appalachian region, September 1 marks the first day of American ginseng season, when the valuable medicinal plant may be legally harvested and sold. In Asia, the plant’s roots are prized as a natural cure-all; in the United States, the generational knowledge and regional folklore around it strengthen a community of dedicated practitioners.

Today, in honor of the open season, we are excited to officially launch a new online exhibition, “American Ginseng: Local Knowledge, Global Roots.” We invite you to dig into the multimedia exhibit to learn about ginseng’s fascinating past and promising future. Meet 45 experts—growers, dealers, researchers, stewards, herbalists, and chefs—who are committed to sustaining this endangered forest botanical.

Do you have your own story about American ginseng? By uploading text and photos, you can help us grow the exhibition and expand our understanding of the “green gold” of the forest.

Ginseng harvest season opens tomorrow. Just because it’s a date on the calendar, doesn’t mean the ginseng is ready. Wait for any green berries to turn before harvesting.

When it comes time to sell, make sure you sell to a licensed Kentucky ginseng dealer. A list is available at https://www.kyagr.com/marketing/documents/GIN_DealersbyCounty.pdf.

Happy hunting and please practice good stewardship.

Are you following the 100 days of Ginseng? Look here for some great information all summer about ginseng. Kentucky season opens September 1, but wait to harvest those plants with green berries.

Day 11 - A healthy population of American ginseng will include different “generations'', ranging from seedlings, to juveniles, to mature plants that can seed reliably year after year. In the wild, the vast majority of seed-producing plants are 10 years or older. Because of this slow life-cycle, all generations of ginseng plants are crucial to a population, and major disturbances have a lasting impact.

This old root came in a part of a lot we certified fresh on October 28, 2021. While it wasn’t certified as an individual root, our staff was curious how many age scars were present. There were 72 definite stem scars on this root. It is the oldest root our current staffers have counted.

If you have a chance encounter with a large root like this, take your time to dig it out while preserving all the tap roots and fiber.
