REMINDERS DURING AN EARTHQUAKE
During an earthquake, immediately DROP to the ground, COVER your head and neck under a sturdy piece of furniture like a desk or table, and HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops. If no shelter is nearby, stay on your knees, protect your head and neck with your arms, and stay next to an interior wall. If you are driving, pull over to a clear area away from buildings and power lines.
Indoors
DROP: to your hands and knees so the earthquake doesn't knock you down.
COVER: your head and neck with your arms.
HOLD ON: to a sturdy desk or table, and be prepared to move with it if it shifts.
If no shelter is nearby, crawl to the nearest interior wall or corner, protecting your head and neck.
Stay away from windows, outside doors, and anything that could fall.
Stay inside until the shaking stops and it's safe to move.
If in Bed
Stay in bed and use a pillow to cover your head and neck.
Only move if you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall.
Outdoors
Move to an open space away from buildings, power lines, and trees.
Drop to the ground and stay there until the shaking stops.
If in a Vehicle
Pull over to a clear spot away from buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
Fasten your seatbelt and stay in the vehicle until the shaking stops.
After the earthquake, proceed cautiously and avoid bridges or ramps.
General Safety Tips
Stay calm: to make clear decisions.
Do not use elevators: during the earthquake.
Do not run outside: or to other rooms, as most injuries happen when people move during the shaking.
Be prepared for aftershocks: by practicing the Drop, Cover, and Hold On technique.
