In early active labor, contractions last for about 1 minute.

You can do anything for one minute!

Use this video during labor and delivery as a reminder.

You can also use it to practice your breathing techniques using the ice method prior to labor.

There’s so much talk about dilation at the end of pregnancy… and honestly, I’m not really sure why.

Actually, I am sure why. Because it’s what everyone keeps asking you.
“Are you dilated yet?”
“Did your doctor check your cervix?”
“Oh no, you’re not dilated!? You’ll need to be induced! You’ll need a c section! That baby’s never coming out!”

Sound familiar?

Here’s the truth: we put way too much weight on cervical dilation at the end of pregnancy, when really, it doesn’t mean a thing before labor starts. Not even a little bit. Promise.

I’ve been in this field for 30 years, and I’ve never once met a cervix that could tell the future. I’ve seen someone go from completely closed to 10 cm in two hours, and I’ve seen others walk around at 5 cm for weeks.

And dilation isn’t the cervix’s only job. It also has to thin out (efface), soften (from the thickness of your nose to the thinness of paper and the softness of butter), and move position (from pointing to the back of your body to pointing forward).

I know it’s hard not to stress when everyone around you is pressuring you about dilation. But here’s the thing: dilation doesn’t start labor. Oxytocin does. That’s where I come in.

If you’re ready to stop worrying about dilation and want real support in helping your body move toward labor naturally, let’s talk.

2024 is almost a wrap and it’s been quite a year—full of lessons, growth, and moments of reflection.
A few key highlights from this year and some things to look forward to in 2025:

After attending thousands of births over the past 30 years, I’ve officially retired from midwifery. It’s been a rewarding journey, but the system isn’t set up for midwives to truly thrive.

Leaving the birth space is bittersweet, but I’m excited for the next chapter supporting women’s wellness in other ways.
Midwife means with “with woman”, not just during the childbearing year but through other life cycles as well.

I’ve been focused on growing my social media, hitting 100k followers on TikTok and almost 10k on my IG. I’ve also been growing my account, where you’ll hear more about yoga and women’s wellness, including classes and upcoming retreats.

Jason and I have been working on launching a new business in the new year. If you love all-natural handmade body care products, stones, and jewelry, stay tuned!

I also started a book this year that I plan to finish in 2025. I’m excited to share my journey and insights.

This year, I’ve leaned into yoga and wellness, preparing for exciting new classes, retreats, and sacred circles in 2025.

On a personal note, my sister has been bravely battling cancer, and my other sister has been dealing with her own health struggles. Your prayers and positive energy mean the world.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported me this year. Your encouragement means the world, and I’m excited for all the transformations that 2025 will bring.

Let’s face it, postpartum is a beautiful journey, but it can also be overwhelming. Let's talk about some tips to help with a smooth transition! 🌸

1️⃣ Make a Support Plan: Having a strong support system can make a big difference. Years ago, women didn’t do it alone. They were surrounded by family, friends and midwives who cared for them. Mom’s only job is to recover and care for baby.
Making a support plan is vital to recovery. A postpartum doula or midwife can help you design your support plan.

2️⃣ Birth options: Your birth experience can have a huge impact on postpartum recovery. Write your preferences & discuss it with your care provider. Knowing your options can help you to be empowered & alleviate anxiety.

3️⃣ Postpartum Midwifery Care: Consider engaging a postpartum midwife for care. Those early days and weeks after coming home from the hospital can be overwhelming and confusing with lots of questions about your health & newborn care. Postpartum midwives not only offer emotional support & education but they also offer constant clinical assessments to ensure optimal physical recovery.

4️⃣ Proper Nutrition: This is essential for ideal postpartum recovery, body and mind. Make a meal plan for the postpartum period and start preparing meals in late pregnancy that are easy to thaw & eat during postpartum. Having someone experienced in postpartum nutrition such as a doula can help you make a meal plan or help you cook for recovery.

5️⃣ Self-Care: Prioritize self-care routines. This sounds difficult but having a postpartum support person can also help you plan and execute routines such as mindfulness exercises, light exercises, or light massages at home, to help you nurture your well-being.

6️⃣ Communication: Don't hesitate to discuss your emotions with your healthcare provider, midwife or doula. Seeking help is a sign of strength and can be so empowering.

📆The time to start
planning for postpartum is during pregnancy so start making your plan now!

Another gorgeous placenta ready for encapsulation for a lovely mama!

🤰 Why encapsulate your placenta?

The placenta is a pretty amazing organ that the body creates just for baby.

It brings blood full of vital nutrients from mom to nourish baby as well as filter out waste during pregnancy.

After birth, it can be consumed by mom to help postpartum support recovery.

Placentopagy (placenta consumption) is an age old practice that has been known to help with postpartum recovery throughout history.

The placenta contains hormones, iron and prostaglandins that can assist with:

*Uterine shrinkage, helps minimize postpartum bleeding and return to pre pregnancy size.

*Postpartum blues through iron and oxytocin.

*Breastmilk flow and supply

*Recovery of depleted iron from blood loss. This can also help with low energy and postpartum blues as Iron deficiency can also contribute to this.

🤰 So, what happens during encapsulation?

The encapsulation process is always performed in a sanitized environment with sterile equipment performed by a licensed midwife, trained in sterile technique and blood pathogens.

The placenta is first cleaned and drained to remove excess blood.

The amniotic sac and cord are then removed and the placenta is steamed.

It is then sliced into thin slices and placed in a sterile dehydrator for 12-14 hours on low heat (to preserve the nutrients!)
Your baby’s cord will also be dehydrated for a forever cord keepsake!

The slices are then placed into a grinder and ground into a powder that can be filled into vegan capsules.

The capsules are placed in a glass jar, labeled with your name and dispensing instructions. They’re packed neatly in a gift bag and delivered to you within 48 hours of pickup!

A full term placenta will typically yield between 120-250 capsules depending on the size.
Not all placentas are created equal!

Voila! You’ve got the support you need to help with your 4th trimester!

There Once Was a Young Girl...

There once was a young girl who knew that she wanted to be involved in new life coming into this world...she didn’t know how she was to be involved, but she knew that that was her life’s calling....or so she thought.

She dived deep, at a very young age, into every book, every magazine, every article and every professional that she came into contact with that had anything to do with pregnancy and birth.

Her very first job was in an OB/GYN office, at the age of 16, where she worked as a file clerk. There, she read every chart, every lab result, every ultrasound and inquired, as many times as was tolerable, of the Doctor and Midwife in hopes to gain as much knowledge as possible. It was then that she learned of midwives and it all began to make sense, it called to her; A Midwife, with woman, is what she would be.

Shortly after she began the file clerk position, she attended the birth of her very best friend’s child. It was during her friend’s labor and birth, when she witnessed her friend lying alone on the hospital bed silently crying through contractions because she had not been educated and had no knowledge of what to expect or what tools to use. It was when interventions were introduced without her friend’s knowledge or consent that she began to realize what she was really meant to do.
