To this day, hearing the Salvation Army Red Kettle bell ring brings me right back to childhood visits with my grandmother. We’d often run errands together, and one of her favorite places to go was our local Salvation Army Thrift Store, or “Sally’s” as she called it. She always said that she never needed anything but wanted to “go and look around”. She always left with something, and it was almost always something for someone else. Everyone at Sally’s knew and loved her, and occasional questions about the cost of items with missing price tags were answered with “for you Mary, $1.” She was an amazing, thoughtful, and generous soul—one that seemed to grow even warmer each time one of her treasures was passed on to someone else.
Sally’s gave so much in so many ways to both me and my gramma. Unknowingly, those who donated to Salvation Army gave far more than they ever imagined. They gave me cherished memories, gave us treasured times together, and gave everyone the reminder that the deepest, most heartfelt joy can be found in giving.
Now that I am an adult, it’s no wonder I look forward to volunteering at the annual Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign each year. Please join Santa and I as we share the holiday spirit at TOPS IN PANORAMA PLAZA IN PENFIELD THIS SATURDAY, 12/13 FROM 10 am TO 12 noon. Your donation, no matter how small or large brings joy to so many of the less fortunate in our community. Together, let’s keep the spirit of giving alive this season. See you there!
