Zona incerta The zona incerta is a horizontally elongated region of gray matter cells in the subthalamus below the thalamus. Its connections project extensively over the brain from the cerebral cortex down into the spinal cord. Its function is unknown, though several potential functions related to “limbic–motor integration” have been proposed, such as controlling visceral activity and pain; gating sensory input and synchronizing cortical and subcortical brain rhythms. Intraoperative Ultrasound for Spine Surgery Accurate and efficient registration of pre-operative computed tomography or magnetic resonance images with iUS images are key elements in the success of iUS-based spine navigation. While widely investigated in research, iUS-based spine navigation has not yet been established in the clinic. This is due to several factors including the lack of a standard methodology for the assessment of accuracy, robustness, reliability, and usability of the registration method. [ 548 more words ]

Moyamoya Disease Epidemiology outside of Asia Studies from outside of Asia are rare. In Washington state and California, the incidence of MMD was reported to be 0.086/100,000 based on 298 patients. The incidence was the highest in Asians, followed by Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics. The incidence in Asian Americans was 4.6 times higher than that in Whites. Female preponderance was also noted [ 445 more words ]

Asleep subthalamic deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease Deep brain stimulation (DBS) implantation under general anesthesia (GA) is of great importance for patients with disabling off-medication symptoms or medical comorbidities. However, the relative advantages/disadvantages of routine local anesthesia (LA) surgery versus GA regarding clinical outcomes are controversial, and the safety of DBS implantation under GA is debatable. Iatrogenic peripheral nerve injury Treatment Iatrogenic peripheral nerve injury is a considerable social and economic concern and the majority of cases are preventable. Complications should be referred to and dealt with promptly by experienced surgeons, to ensure the best chances for optimal functional recovery. Their prevention should be emphasized. Their management should include ensuring early diagnosis, administering an appropriate treatment with rehabilitation, rendering psychological support, and providing control of pain [ 1,282 more word ]

NRF2 see Nrf2 signaling pathway. Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2, also known as NFE2L2 or Nrf2, is a transcription factor that in humans is encoded by the NFE2L2 gene, which protect cells from the oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species and, on the other hand, are associated with resistance to cancer treatments. Several drugs that stimulate the NFE2L2 pathway are being studied for the treatment of diseases that are caused by [ 916 more words ]

CD24 Signal transducer CD24 also known as cluster of differentiation 24 or heat-stable antigen CD24 (HSA) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CD24 gene. CD24 is a cell adhesion molecule. CD24 is a sialoglycoprotein expressed at the surface of most B lymphocytes and differentiating neuroblasts. It is also expressed on neutrophils and neutrophil precursors from the myelocyte stage onwards. [ 545 more words ]

Neurofilaments Neurofilaments (NF) are the 10 nanometer or intermediate filaments found in neurons. They are a major component of the neuronal cytoskeleton, and are believed to function primarily to provide structural support for the axon and to regulate axon diameter. Neurofilaments are composed of polypeptide chains or subunits which belong to the same protein family as the intermediate filaments of other… [ 496 more words ]
