You may not have realized, but MOUTHING is a key to feeding success!
Babies naturally begin bringing objects to their mouths around 5 months. While this can be worrisome for some parents (germs, choking, allergies), this step is SO important for later feeding development. All too often, I meet a picky eating toddler whose parents report, “I was so lucky, he never put anything in his mouth!” But this for me, is actually a red flag. 🚩
There are SO many benefits of mouthing, please don’t let your baby skip this step! Mouthing:
✔️teaches the hands to mouth skills needed for later independent feeding
✔️moves the gag reflex back further in the mouth
✔️reduces/prevents oral hypersensitivity ✔️advances tongue movement needed for later intake of solids
✔️advances jaw movement needed for later spoon feeding, chewing, and cup drinking
✔️helps baby calm and regulate himself
✔️is enjoyable for baby
Know any babies who skipped this step? Don’t worry, just get that mouthing practice started right away. 👍🏻 And if your child is refusing, try the ideas in my last post and seek the help of a SLP or OT!
