So honoured to attend Mr John Reynolds investiture for OAM yesterday at his home in Mapleton. Dr Young, Qld Governor and her team were kind enough to come to St Isadores for the ceremony including a photo in front of Lyn and John's home which is the original farm house in Mapleton built in 1890. Lyn and John have continued to restore it and the photo on the steps is a replica of one taken with the Govenor of Qld in 1904. A very special day.

Are you struggling to feel well with Hashimoto's Disease? Your gut could be contributing more than you think.

Are you struggling to feel well with Hashimoto's Disease? Your gut could be contributing more than you think.

Why a healthy gut is critical to stopping Hashimoto's flare ups

I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease in 2011 but in retrospect I can see I was getting sick long before it turned my life on end.

Since then I have worked hard to heal my body and restore my health and while I do have the odd day where I feel inflammed and exhausted, 90% of the time I am strong and healthy. I just need to eat well and do the right things to nurture my body.

As a women's Health Coach I know putting all the pieces of the puzzle together to get well and stay well can be difficult. The scary thing is Hashimoto's is the most common auto-immune disease in the world today and it affects far more women than men.

There are lots of different reasons why people get Hashimoto's or one of the other 50 types of Thyroid disorders that exist. For me I can link it back to Epstein Barr Virus, Ross River Fever, on going infections, stressful jobs and years of hormone treatment for Endometriosis.

All of these things contributed to ongoing elevated cortisol, hormone imbalance, a leaky gut, a toxic liver and a severely compromised immune system.

What I did not realise back then was what a direct role my gut health played in me getting sick. I knew I had leaky ut and starting to heal it, detox my body and support my liver were all critical first steps in getting well.

What I didn't know, was nasty toxins called Lipopolysaccharides or LPS were playing a key role in making me and keeping me sick.

LPS are toxins that come from unfriendly bacteria in your gut. Not only can LPS cause Hashimoto's Disease by making the body produce antibodies against is own thyroid cells, if you don't do something to stop LPS entering your blood stream they can continue to cause auto-immune flare ups and attacks on your Thyroid.

So if you have Hashimoto's Disease and you have not been focusing on healing and keeping your gut healthy and you continue to have symptoms and flare ups, it may be time to start taking a serious look at your gut health.

How do you go about healing your gut?

First step is to strengthen your gut lining so the nasty toxins can't get through into your blood stream.

You do this by:
- taking inflammatory foods out of your diet like wheat, soy, refined sugar, corn, dairy
- reducing your exposure to toxins like antibiotics, NSAIDS, alcohol and birth control pills
- getting some bone broth, gelatin or collagen into your diet (not if you are vegetarian)
- taking some L- Glutamine, zinc and quercetin
- eating more tumeric

Second step is to balance the good bacteria in your gut and get rid of the bad.
How?
- Add fermented foods and probiotics to your diet
- Increase fibre intake
- Eat more prebiotic resistent starch in foods like chickpease, lentils, cold potato salad

The important thing to remember is that we are all different and will react differently to foods.

I always have my clients introduce changes slowly to see how their body reacts and to give the body time to heal. Even taking something like Probiotics can give you digestive issues if you are not used to taking them.

Want to know what to feed your brain to keep it healthy? Read my post below from The Wise Wellness Coach.

How healthy is your Brain?

Did you know diets high in sugar and carbohydrates are linked to a significant increase in the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and dementia when you are older?

A study by the respected Mayo clinic shows people who eat a diet high in carbohydrates and sugars are four times more likely to get mild cognitive impairment whereas people who consume a diet high in healthy fats are 42% less likely.

So why are healthy fats so important for your Brain?

Because your Brain is nearly 60% fat and by consuming the fatty acids that are found in healthy fats you are feeding your Brain what it needs to stay healthy and perform at its best.

5 Fats that help keep your Brain healthy!

1. Wild Caught Fish - salmon in particular is an excellent source of DHA, a fatty acid that helps develop and protect brain cells and can improve memory and cognition if consumed a couple of times a week

2. Avocados - are an absolute powerhouse in providing monounsaturated fats to reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure and feed your brain. Add some feta cheese and a little lemon or lime to spice them up on toast or add them to your smoothies of a morning

3. Eggs - not only are eggs no longer considered a major risk to heart health and cholesterol it turns out your brain really loves them. Eggs for breakfast a few times a week will give your brain the much needed choline it needs for healthy memory and cognition

4. Nuts - including a handful of nuts in your day will give you Vitamin E, Omega 3 fatty acids, copper and manganese all which will help nurture and protect brain cells as well as giving you a nice little burst of protein for energy

5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil - This should be no surprise to anyone and it certainly is not to the Italians and Greeks who use it liberally in all their meals. I use it everyday not just on salads but to add goodness to a whole variety of foods like eggs, avocados and meats knowing I am feeding my brain what it needs to thrive

Remember, it is never too early or too late to start looking after your brain. Crowd out the carbohydrates and sugars in your diet with healthy fats and your brain will love you.

What is a Health Coach and how can they help?

People ofter ask how a Health Coach is different to a Life Coach or a Fitness Coach.

As a Health Coach for women I work with my clients to look at how all aspects of their life are affecting their health and how they can change what they are doing to improve their overall health and wellbeing and create healthy lives they love.

While there is a big focus on key elements of health like nutrition, physical activity and sleep we also look more broadly at their relationships, financial stressors, how happy they are in their home environment, what role spirituality plays in their life and how much joy is in their lives.

I call these Primary Foods and many times they can have an even greater impact on a woman's health than the basics we all think about when we think Health and Wellbeing.

Do you feel like your health is suffering? Are you struggling with menopause, thyroid conditions or simply a body that is changing with age?

A health coaching program with me can help you get your health back on track and get you feeling well again.

It has been a while since I have posted on this page and I am pleased I have something important to finally share with you all. My husband and I left Australia late January on an 8 month adventure OS. We are now on Day 43 of lockdown in Spain. Since we left we have launched our new website containing stories and photos of our adventures in Bali and I have also written some articles on lockdown in Spain, the latest "A Glimmer of Light at the End of the Tunnel" which is attached. Hope you enjoy reading it and while you are in gonewalkabout.travel I would love you to check out my other stories.
Take care and stay well.

As of today, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the long the tunnel of fear and anxiety that the people of Spain have been living with since lockdown com

Love these wise words.

I went to a party and met two older women, both of whom were among the sexiest and most glamorous stars of my youth. I’ve always been fascinated by Emerson’s line, “As I age, my beauty steals inward.” Something so incredible happens with age. It’s not so much that you lose something, as that one energy shifts into something else. I particularly notice that with aging women. There’s a kind of youthful physical beauty that falls away - but what emerges, at least in many cases, is someone who has become so much more interesting. And still physically beautiful perhaps, but in another kind of way. Age is a challenging thing to do well. Embracing the gravitas of age while at the same time retaining the lightheartedness of youth is not easy. I know the work involved is mainly spiritual, but that doesn’t make it simple. The more time you’ve had on earth, the more things you have to forgive, to regret, to mourn, to not be bitter about, to not let harden you, to atone for, to grieve, to miss and wish were still here. But when I meet older women who have seen it all and now lay it down with the blunt wisdom that comes from that, I definitely find them the most interesting humans of all. Chapter Three is either a crown of gold or a crown of thorns. The choice seems to be a moment by moment decision, with a powerful lure in both directions. I feel blessed to encounter the women older than me who personify doing it well.

So much wisdom worth sharing❤️

This 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with her hair fashionably coiffed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home yesterday. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.

After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window. “I love it,” she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room …. just wait.”

“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged, it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice;

I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away, just for this time in my life.”

She went on to explain, “Old age is like a bank account, you withdraw from what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing.”

And with a smile, she said: “Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less, & enjoy every moment.
