New TRIAD Podcast about racial disparity, student achievement. and special education is LIVE! See below for details:

Students of color educated in high poverty urban schools have traditionally experienced low achievement. However, there are some high poverty schools serving large concentrations of students of color that achieve high levels of academic performance. What if we can identify these systems and structures in the high achievement schools that have been shown to produce a positive impact on academic performance by facilitating effective strategies in the classroom and within the school itself? To address this topic, Dr. Graham Taylor speaks with Dr. Shaana Berman about her dissertation, Overcoming a Legacy of Low Achievement: the systems and the structures in a high performing high poverty, California elementary school.

When I was conducting research for my dissertation at USC, the joke in our cohort was that we would all dedicate years of our lives to these projects, obtain our degrees, and then file our dissertations in a drawer, never to be seen or mentioned ever again. It's a sign of the times that in the last few weeks, five professionals have reached out to me regarding my work, which focused on racial disparity in student achievement and in special education. If you're interested, take a listen to Dr. Graham Taylor and I discussing systems and structures in high poverty schools that facilitate high levels of academic performance.

I know I've posted about this book before, but I wanted to do it again because it's now available as an Audiobook!! It's called The Kids of Widney Junior High, and is based on a real group of kids with special needs who found their voices as a band in high school in 1988. It's an incredible book to read - especially with your junior high or high school kids. The new edition includes a few other updates and bonus features including two UNRELEASED (!!) Kids of Widney High songs, such as their rap about their "cool" bus driver! Love love love it!!

It’s the first day of school, and I’m already hearing things like this:

“I’m freaking out!” --From several parents and a bunch of kids too.

“I have two kids and I work from home. How am I supposed to do this?!”—Parent of a 2nd grader and a newborn.

“My son has ADHD and can’t sit still for more than a @ #!* minute.”—Parent of a 1rst grader

“Dude, there isn’t enough wine in the world to get me to like this or feel like I’m doing it well,”—My personal favorite comment so far, from a single mom with special needs twins.

Are you freaking out about this remote learning thing too? I want to help, so I’m launching a new service delivery model: Office Hours. Here’s the format:

• Office Hours is cohort-based, and the Fall Cohort will begin next Thursday, (September 3, 2020).
• There will be 8 virtual workshops: (Lecture/Q&A).
• Each week, we’ll meet up in a private Facebook group for a 30-minute livestream on a topic of interest, followed by a 30-minute discussion forum for individual questions/vents/shares etc. (If we need to, I’ll adjust to accommodate questions and/or work them into the weekly curriculum).

Jackson (who is 10 and already knows more about social media than I likely ever will lol) advised me to include some limited time offers—he’s been researching how to become a Youtube star, and apparently, “Preston Plays” ALWAYS does that, mom. It’s so cool.” Check them out below.

Comment “ADD ME” and I’ll send you a registration link.

Spaces in Office Hours are limited, so grab your spot now and I’ll “see” you next week!

Limited Time Offers

*Limited Time Offer 1: To celebrate Jackson starting 5th grade, I’m offering registration in our Fall Cohort for only $50. This offer will expire on Sunday, August 30 at 5pm.

**Limited Time Offer 2: The first 3 people to join get a FREE 30-minute virtual Boost Session with me via Zoom. (BOOST is an individual consulting session).

***Limited Time Offer 3: EVERYONE who signs up will get a coupon for 20% off individual services, good through December 2020.

After a full day of hyper-focus, I give you this fancy infographic, "Six Strategies for Successful Remote Learning." Sending lots of positive vibes to parents of school-aged children as we transition back to some form of education during this chaotic time.

So, I have ADHD. Really, I do. I was supposed to be doing about 50 other things when I got distracted by the idea of making an infographic on Canva. A lot of people have been sharing their anxiety, fear, and concern abou...

There are many arguments both for and against returning children to school this fall. Working parents with full time jobs out of the home, parents of a child or multiple children with special needs, people living in poverty, those dealing with domestic violence in the home, and/or people with mental illnesses may have competing needs.

What’s your situation?

Any suggestions for positive change as we move through this challenging and unprecedented time?

The dangers of social isolation outweigh the risks of in-person classes for most children, says the American Academy of Pediatrics.
