We have a physical sensation first and then the mind gives that sensation or a cluster of sensations a name.
Understanding the language of the emotions makes it much easier to navigate and “process” them.
Here are some common examples of how emotions can show up in our bodies:
Sadness may show up as heaviness in the chest, a lump in the throat
Anger you may notice a tight jaw, clenched fists, tense shoulders, or stiff arms
Fear can create soreness or tension around the lower back or kidney area
Joy may show up as lightness in the chest, relaxed shoulders, a sense of openness in the body
Some emotions can be difficult to navigate. And it’s easy to get stuck in the emotions especially when dealing some form of chronic illness. What can be helpful is coming back to the body. To the physical sensations of the emotions so you don’t get sucked into the story and the mind loops.
