Varik Animal Chiropractic Dr. Kristin Varik is a certified animal chiropractor serving Southern Ontario Animal Chiropractic is a natural, hands-on approach to your animal’s health care.

Animal chiropractic concerns itself with the relationship of the spine and nervous system to the overall proper functioning and well being on an animal. The application of animal chiropractic involves a small quick thrust (adjustment) directed to specific joints of the spine and/or limbs. The adjustment helps to improve joint range of motion and mobility and helps restore proper function of the nervous system. Initial consultation and examination includes thorough health history review, gait analysis, static and motion palpation of the joints, muscles and extremities, range of motion testing, neurological evaluation, and sometimes a referral for x-ray examination or further testing to rule out a more serious problem. Chiropractic care is NOT intended to replace traditional veterinary care, but is considered a specialized complementary therapy for animals to be used concurrently and in conjunction with your Veterinarian’s care.

A good little exercise for the thoracic sling!

𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗽 - 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀
A great exercise that can be done in-hand or ridden to stimulate the thoracic sling muscles.

Make sure you repeat this exercise on both reins.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁
Place 5 poles end to end and raise them up a little (this makes the more stable and less likely to roll if your horse knocks them)
Walk your horse so he steps across the pole sideways and then back again - in an 'S' shape
Your horse should step over the pole with his leg closest to the pole first

Vitamin E supplementation

Vitamin E greatly decreases in hay through storage, which obviously has big implications in Canada, where much of forage throughout the year is hay rather than fresh grass.

Vit E deficiency can look like:

*Signs of poor performance.

*Struggle to build up strength and topline.

*Fatigue quickly.

*Take a longer time to recover from exercise.

Here is a great blog explaining more about Vitamin E. https://www.ebequine.org/post/vitamin-e-a-winter-warmer-or-year-round-supplement

How to communicate?

Truthfully; text, email or Facebook messages are preferred. It can be difficult to find the time and/or cell service for voicemails and calls when on the road.
And please feel free to follow up if you haven’t heard from me. Sometimes messages can be lost in a large pile. Or occasionally just don’t come through.
Here’s an example from a great client!

Hi All,
I apologize for the lack of communication, but yes! I am back at work! Please be patient as I’m not back full time and navigating 3 under 3 at home. Also, with gas prices such as they are, I am doing my best to organize visits as best possible geographically to not pass these rising costs onto clients.

Feel free to send a text or message to set up an appointment!

As an aside, Longrun has some really lovely horses available right now. I love seeing them when they’ve moved onto a new vocation!

We all love animals. And more than half of Ontarians have a pet in the family. As our furry family members age, they can experience spine, muscle, and joint pain, just like us.
-----
Did you know that chiropractors can also treat animals?
-----
Animal chiropractors specialize in providing a safe and effective hands-on approach to many spine, muscle or joint issues and injuries in pets and large animals - including horses, dogs and cats. For example, animal chiropractors work with competitive animals who are training for agility, flyball, frisbee, or in working roles, such as herding, field trials or tracking.

Animal chiropractic doesn’t replace traditional veterinary medicine or surgery but provides an integrative method of care. Often, veterinarians and animal chiropractors work together to best serve the needs of your pet or a larger animal.

The RHpE can be used to help detect musculoskeletal pain in horses caused by limb lameness and poor saddle fit.

Many people are wondering about the safety of riding or exercising their horses in the current conditions. Air quality index data can be found on the weather network for your area. The chart below is a good guideline to follow until things clear up! Consider stall rest/no exercise at AQI of 10, mild exercise at 5.
