Today, Autism New Zealand announces a Charter School for autistic and neurodivergent learns from years 9-13 in Wellington and Auckland. We believe that every autistic young person deserves the opportunity to learn and grow in ways specific to their needs.

Mainstream education does not always meet the unique needs of autistic learners, who can be particularly disengaged from school. Change of routine, sensory overload, social challenges, anxiety, and bullying/peer victimisation, contribute to high absence rates. A Charter School designed specifically for autistic students, however, can respond more effectively to those challenges.
Students’ days will follow a personalised plan built around their strengths, interests, and needs. Core education will be balanced with development of life skills and social-emotional learning. The school will utilise a mix of home-schooling, online learning, and community-based learning to help transition students back into the classroom for face-to-face learning.
