In 2009 I had a client come back to me at 6 weeks postpartum 👩🏼‍🍼with a tear-drop 💧shaped gap in her belly.

I had NO idea what it was, DESPITE the pre and postnatal trainings I had taken, and books I had read.

Ever since then I’ve been OBSESSED with learning everything I can about how to help clients prevent and heal diastasis recti.

📸This is a pic of me and my best friend in 2005. I had only been teaching Pilates for about 3 years before working with her. She was my FIRST pregnant client! AND she had recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Of course I was nervous!! 😬 Especially back then when there wasn’t a lot of accessible education on the topic!

But because she was my friend, I felt more at ease, and I managed to teach her through her pregnancy with no issues (only positive gains like more energy & self esteem)
She gave birth to a healthy baby boy 👶🏻not long after this picture was taken.

🔹If you’re nervous about teaching pregnant & postnatal women, and want to get some experience before taking on clients, find a perinatal friend or family member to practice with!

✅ Modified Pilates (Mat and Equipment) is 100% safe AND recommended for this special population.

🔹 So pick a perinatal Pilates teacher training program, find a pregnant or postpartum person, and get to work! (And if you can’t find one, apply what you’re learning to ANY client!)

💫Remember, Pilates sessions are NOT just about the perfectly executed exercises. There is a bio-psycho-social aspect to ALL sessions. So, teach what you know with the proper modifications, and an uplifting, compassionate vibe.

And remember, you ONLY have to be “one chapter ahead” 📖 of the client you are working with!
