The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, today had an interactive session with the Committee of Deans and Directors, at which he spoke on institution's key institutional issues.

The interactive session took place at the university Senate Chamber on Thursday, 6th November, 2025.

Prof Ahmed also spoke on the outlined new strategies to strengthen the university’s academic and administrative framework.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the Deans and Directors for their steadfast commitment to academic excellence and administrative diligence.

He highlighted many critical developments within the university system, saying the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had extended the admission process for the current academic session.

Ahmed urged the committee to make deliberate efforts in prioritising the admission of biological children of staff.

He emphasized that it was only fair that those who have dedicated their careers to building this institution see their children benefit from its opportunities.

Turning to staff welfare, the Vice-Chancellor announced that the Kaduna State Government had approved a parcel of land for a university staff housing estate.

He further revealed that discussions were ongoing with the Federal Mortgage Bank to facilitate access to affordable home ownership for staff.

"We want our staff to own decent homes in serene environments similar to those they have served in for decades.

"This is a major step towards improving staff welfare and institutional loyalty, he said.

Prof Ahmed also disclosed that the university had secured a ₦4 billion high-impact intervention for the College of Medical Sciences, a development, he said, would significantly enhance the college’s infrastructure and increase its carrying capacity.

Plans, he also said, were underway to extend similar interventions to other high-demand programmes such as law, as well as departments that provide cross-faculty service courses.

"Our goal is to make our academic programmes more responsive, more competitive, and more aligned with the realities of today’s higher education landscape", he said.

On the issue of funding, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the need for innovative revenue generation, citing dwindling government subventions.

He said the university was now embracing fundraising as a strategic priority, with a target of raising ₦1 billion annually through alumni engagement.

"We have already received encouraging commitments from several alumni who are eager to give back to their alma mater", Prof Ahmed said.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof Raymond B Bako, commended the Deans for their diligence as members of the Senate Standing Committee on results processing.

Bako described their work as timely, concise, and crucial to the academic integrity of the university.

He revealed that the university was working towards eliminating the issuance of statement of results, ensuring that graduating students receive their certificates immediately upon completion, and making transcript processing fully digital and accessible.

Earlier in an address of welcome, the Chairperson, Committee of Deans and Directors, Prof Maryam Aminu, welcomed the Vice-Chancellor to the interaction.

She encouraged members to freely express their opinions and share constructive ideas with the Vice-Chancellor.

In a presentation, the Director of Academic Planning and Monitoring (DAPM), Prof Bello Mukhtar, presented statistical data on undergraduate applications and enrollments over the past three years.

. As Engr. Nura Garba named Ag. Head of Procurement Unit

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has approved the constitution of a committee to restructure and strengthen the university procurement system.

Prof Ashiru Bello of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) has been appointed to head the four-member committee.

A letter constituting the committee dated 28th October, 2025 said the university placed high importance on improving efficiency in its procurement processes.

The Vice-Chancellor noted in the letter that the current procurement arrangement lacked adequate coordination and clearly defined relationships with other administrative and financial units.

He said with the university's increasing engagement in Public Private Partnership (PPP) and other large scale transactions, it became imperative to establish more structured and responsive procurement framework.

Ahmed explained that Prof Bello's appointment was based on his "vast administrative experience and proven record of institutional leadership".

The committee terms of reference include review of the current structure, staffing, and operations of the procurement unit.

The committee is also expected to examine its relationship with other key units such as the Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, Physical Planning and Municipal Services, Public Private Partnership Unit, Bursary, Internal Audit, and Registrar's Office.

It is to identify gaps and inefficiencies affecting coordination and compliance, recommend an appropriate structure and reporting framework for the unit, and propose governance mechanisms to ensure value for money.

Additionally, the committee is expected to advise on staff capacity development and process improvements, including e-procurement and PPP integration.

The committee, which shall report directly to the Vice-Chancellor, is given four weeks within which to submit its report after inauguration.

The Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, Prof Bello Muktar; and Dr Mohammed Abdullahi, Department of Quantity Surveying, are members of the committee.

Former Director, Physical Planning and Municipal Services, Dr Engr. Muhammad Aminu Sambo, is also a member in addition to being the Secretary of the committee.

Dr A S Abdulrasheed speaks on ABU energy challenge initiative

Dr A S Abdulrasheed, the Principal Investigator for the ongoing research towards addressing the energy challenge in Ahmadu Bello University, spoke on the project, saying the initiative was as a result of incessant disconnection of ABU electricity.

Abdulrasheed, a lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering, spoke during the conversation on the ABU Energy and Innovation Challenge (ABUEIC), an event that was held at Yusufu Bala Usman Hall, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Christened 'Beyond the Grid: Powering ABU's Energy Future', the initiative was essentially to discover and support practical, and homegrown clean solutions developed by students, staff, and alumni.

According to him, he wrote a proposal and secured a grant for the project.

He said the idea was nurtured when he was nominated to be part of a committee for the demolition of the famous ABU Kainji Dam Model at the Faculty of Engineering.

The Principal Investigator said he was also inspired as ABU had a link with the Kainji Dam which students of the Faculty of Engineering used for practical lessons.

Dr Abdulrasheed further said reconnecting ABU and Kainji would mean a lot to the university.

He underscored the capacity of ABU in terms of self reliance, competent intellectuals, professionals and research ethics in energy generation.

Based on Africa's energy landscape, according to him, over 600 million Africans lacked access to electricity.

Abdulrasheed, who said Africa's share of global energy was less than three percent, explained that Nigeria was rich in energy but experienced a total of 46 grid failures between 2017 and 2023, 12 in 2024, and 5 in 2025.

In a goodwill message at the occasion, Kaduna State Commissioner of Education, Prof Abubakar Sani Sambo, emphasised that ABU had the capacity to generate its own electricity and even sell to neighbouring communities.

The commissioner also expressed delight over the collaboration between the university and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and urged that such effort should be sustained.

Also speaking, the Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof Maryam Aminu, explained that ABUEIC reflected the collective recognition that sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy was not a luxury for an academic community but a lifeblood.

Maryam said as an advisor to ABUEIC she was proud of the vision driving the initiative which aligned research with real-world impact, linking academia, industry, and government towards one goal.

Prof Maryam commended the Vice-Chancellor for his steadfast support, the ABUEIC leadership for dedication, and partners for believing in ABU capacity to lead in energy research and innovation.

ABU paid about ₦2bn in last few months for electricity - Vice-Chancellor

Ahmadu Bello University paid about two billion Naira in the last few months to the Kaduna Electric for electricity, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has disclosed.

The Vice-Chancellor, however, explained that the institution's cost for electricity consumption was reduced through the workings of different committees raised by the university to save energy wastage.

Prof Ahmed disclosed this when he spoke at the launching of ABU Energy and Innovation Challenge held at Yusufu Bala Usman Hall, ABU, Zaria.

ABU Energy and Innovation Challenge (ABUEIC) is an initiative aimed at addressing the persistent energy challenges in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The initiative was designed as a university-wide programme to discover and support practical homegrown clean solutions developed by students, staff, and alumni.

The Vice-Chancellor said the university had for long relied on external support to address energy crisis, declaring that it was "now time for action".

He said the university management would continue to support the Faculty of Engineering and Chairman of ABU Energy and Innovation Challenge, Dr A S Abdulrasheed, for efforts towards addressing energy challenge.

The Vice-Chancellor also expressed gratitude to the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Dr Abba Aliyu, for the donation of 450 solar street lights to the university.

In his remarks at the occasion, the Managing Director, Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Dr Abba Aliyu, spoke on the mandate of the agency, saying REA was established to accelerate the generation of electricity in rural areas.

Aliyu, who was represented by Dr Bala Tyoden, said ABU was one of the beneficiaries of the agency's mega electricity package for tertiary institutions.

He also said ABU had not only been an observer at the agency's concluded investment forum but also a catalyst for progress.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Director, Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University, Prof S A Jonah, gave an insight on what energy was all about.

Jonah argued that energy remained the life blood of modern development in Nigeria.

Nigeria and ABU, according to him, could not afford to be left behind in terms of research that would solve the energy challenge of the country.

In a presentation, a representative of the Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, Engr. Hassana O Abubakar, stressed that ABU could be powered through combined intellectual capacity and technology.

Hassana, therefore, called on the university management to leverage on Public Private Partnership (PPP) in order to overcome the energy challenge.

Vice-Chancellor inspects ongoing toilets project at ABU Quarter II housing estate

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, was today at Quarter II housing estate to inspect 27 toilets being constructed for residents of the area.

The project, comprising three blocks of nine toilets each, followed concern by the Vice-Chancellor over the total dilapidation of the existing toilet facilities in the place.

The Vice-Chancellor came to know of the situation when he visited the place last September in an effort to assess the conditions of staff residential homes on the campus.

Worried about the situation, the Vice-Chancellor immediately directed that new toilets should be constructed to avoid open defecation that might likely result in health risks.

In addition, Prof Ahmed approved the installation of 25 street solar lamps to lighten streets for maximum security in the staff residential area.

Inspecting the project today - Sunday, 2nd November, 2025 -, the Vice-Chancellor expressed satisfaction with the progress of the work.

On arrival at the staff residential area, Prof Ahmed met the contractor handling the work at the site, and commended him.

The Vice-Chancellor was hopeful that the toilets would be responsibly utilised by the residents through effective maintenance.

Already, two blocks of the toilets have been completed while work on the remaining one block is ongoing, and it is expected to equally be ready before the week runs out.

Upon sighting the Vice-Chancellor at the project site, some residents of the area came and expressed gratitude to him for the gesture.

Gov Dauda Lawal's consistent goodwill towards ABU a reference point - Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, says the consistent goodwill of His Excellency, Dauda Lawal, the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, towards the university reflects his abiding respect for his alma mater.

According to him, Lawal's tremendous support to ABU became a reference point for how every alumnus should relate with his or her alma mater with gratitude, generosity, and purpose.

Governor Dauda Lawal is a distinguished alumus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he had both BSc and MSc all in Political Science in 1988 and 1991 respectively.

The Vice-Chancellor spoke when he led a delegation from the institution on a courtesy visit to the governor in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, on Friday, 31st October, 2025.

Prof Ahmed noted that Lawal had continued to demonstrate that true loyalty to one's alma mater was not measured by words but by genuine commitment and tangible contributions.

"We are deeply grateful, not only for this warm reception, but also for your numerous and unsolicited acts of support to Ahmadu Bello University", he said.

The Vice-Chancellor also stated that Gov Lawal's gesture, as always, reflected his deep humility, openness, and abiding respect for the university that helped shape his remarkable leadership journey.

Ahmed declared that a new Zamfara with hope, progress, and prosperity was emerging under Gov Lawal's stewardship.

"Your Excellency, Zamfara has often been described as a 'State of missed opportunities', just as our dear country, Nigeria, has at times appeared as a nation of unfulfilled dreams.

"But your administration's strides in the last two years - your courage, vision, and focused leadership - stand as a powerful affirmation that change is possible", he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence that the foundation the governor was laying would reposition the state as a beacon of development and peace in northern Nigeria and beyond.

The university, according to him, took immense pride in his accomplishments and pray for his continued success in steering the affairs of the state.

He assured the governor of ABU's readiness to support his government in any way he might so desire, be it in the areas of education, research, policy formulation, or technical partnership.

"As your alma mater, our doors remain open, and our intellectual resources available, to complement your efforts in driving the development agenda of Zamfara State", he said.

Responding, His Excellency, Gov Dauda Lawal, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and members of his entourage for the visit, saying he would continue to tap from ABU expertise in developing the state.

Gov Lawal described the Vice-Chancellor's remarks as encouraging, which according to him, would spur him to do more for the good people of Zamfara State and humanity.

Lawal pointed out that he was fully aware of ABU's numerous challenges and urged the university to count on his unwavering support towards addressing such challenges.

Zamfara to partner ABU on capacity building, agriculture, others

Zamfara State Governor, His Excellency, Dauda Lawal, has announced the willingness of his administration to partner with Ahmadu Bello University in the areas of education, agriculture and capacity building.

Gov Lawal disclosed this when he received the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, and other management staff of the university who called on him at Zamfara State Government House on Friday, 31st October, 2025.

Lawal, who had both his first and second degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, stressed that education was the responsibility of not only the government, but also all citizens of the country.

He recalled with nostalgia his undergraduate days in ABU, saying he always preferred staying in Zaria to going home when the university was on break due to the quality of the school.

Lawal described ABU as "one of the best schools in the world", saying he had no apology for that given the quality of education he received from the institution.

He said as leaders they had a duty to contribute, noting that the best way to give to alma mater was by doing what you could do to assist for the betterment of humanity.

The governor told the delegation that his doors were always opened and ABU should continue to count on him for support.

Gov Lawal said partnership was something that the state would work together with ABU due to the quality of its teaching and non-teaching staff.

He appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for releasing some of his competent staff to join his administration to help develop Zamfara.

In the area of agriculture, Gov Lawal emphasised that the state would also partner with ABU, as the state was planning to begin mechanized farming.

Lawal further stated that the state would also partner with the university on intellectual and capacity building for civil servants and top government officials.

This, according to him, was key in understanding the basic roles of civil servants in governance.

The governor also said this clearly showed why they invited consultants when they wanted to appoint Permanent Secretaries.

Lawal thanked the Vice-Chancellor and members of his entourage for the visit and looked forward to a more partnership with the university.

Those who came along with the Vice-Chancellor were Registrar, Rabiu Samaila; Director, Institute for Agricultural Research, Prof Ado Yusuf; Director, National Animal Production Research Institute, Prof Rabiu Hassan; and Director, National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services, Prof Sani Yusuf Ahmad.

Others included Director, Directorate of Advancement and International Education, Prof M I Umar-Buratai; Dean, Faculty of Administration, Prof M K Isah; Coordinator Gender Policy Unit, Prof Rahanatu Lawal; and Prof Ashiru Bello of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.

Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Auwalu Umar; Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Ibrahim Sani Kaita; and Senior Information and Protocol Officer, Ahmad Haruna Waziri, were also on the Vice-Chancellor's entourage.
