🌟 We’re thrilled to welcome Dr Harry Klimis to the OncoHeart Specialist Care team at the Sydney Adventist Hospital! 🌟

Dr Klimis is an accomplished Cardio-Oncologist with specialised expertise in cardiovascular disease prevention and advanced echocardiography. He is dedicated to providing proactive, personalised heart care for patients throughout their cancer journey.

Holding a BMedSci (Hons I), MBBS, PhD, GradCertClinEpi and FRACP, Dr Klimis completed his PhD at the University of Sydney, focusing on cardiovascular prevention and digital health. He later undertook a prestigious two-year fellowship at McMaster University in Canada, gaining advanced training in both Cardio-Oncology and Advanced Echocardiography.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr Klimis is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and the Founder & Director of CORIS (Cardio-Oncology Research, Innovation & Survivorship) — a leading research program supported by a $1M NSW Health Cardiovascular Elite Postdoctoral Researcher Grant. His research focuses on making cancer therapies safer for the heart, improving survivorship, and advancing innovation in digital health.

Surviving cancer is a major victory, but what about your heart health after treatment? 🫀

A large study (Cardinale et al., 2015) tracking over 2,600 cancer patients treated with anthracycline chemotherapy found that 98% of heart problems occurred within the first year after treatment. Early detection helped many improve, with some fully recovering. 💪

This study used the standard heart function measure at the time—the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Today, tools like Global Longitudinal Strain (GLS) can detect issues earlier.

The 2022 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Cardio-Oncology guidelines recommend all patients who’ve had anthracycline therapy to have an echocardiogram within the first year post therapy.

A recent paper (Forbes et al., 2025) examined follow-up care for patients (single centre). It found that many patients lacked timely echocardiograms (whether referred to a survivorship clinic or not) during the first year post therapy.

The takeaway:
If you’ve had anthracycline therapy, make sure heart health is part of the conversation with your care team; seeing whether you’ve had, or should have, an echocardiogram or other cardio-oncology evaluations. Catching problems early allows for prompt intervention.🫀✨

As cancer survival rates improve, it’s important to recognise the long-term effects of treatment, particularly on heart health. 💖

Radiation near the heart and coronary vessels can increase the risk of conditions like:
🔹 Pericarditis
🔹 Coronary artery disease (CAD)
🔹 Arrhythmias
🔹 Cardiomyopathy
🔹 Valvular dysfunction
🔹 Heart failure

Certain factors may increase the likelihood of these effects in some people, such as:
⚡️ Higher radiation doses
⚡️ Use of cardiotoxic therapies
⚡️ Radiation to the left side of the chest
⚡️ Pre-existing cardiovascular disease

Before undergoing radiation therapy, consider a chat with your doctor about your cardiovascular health.💬🩺It is also positive to note that newer radiotherapy techniques aim to minimise radiation exposure to the heart.
