Clinical Essential Somatics is Neuromuscular movement re-education that teaches people to regain voluntary control of muscles that have become involuntarily and chronically contracted due to adaptation to accidents, injuries, surgeries, major illnesses or on-going/repetitive emotional or physical stress. Thomas Hanna (Hanna Somatics) termed this state of chronically tight muscles that can't let go as Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) and described SMA as the root cause chronic pain. Sensory Motor Amnesia alters the way one not only moves, but how one experiences him/herself from within, their SOMA-tic experience. By improving the connection between the brain and the muscles people learn to regain sensation and motor control of muscles and movement. Chronically tight muscles affect physical structure and alter posture and movement. Examples of Sensory Motor Amnesia include:

• chronic back pain
• sciatica
• leg length discrepancy
• hip pain
• altered gait
• plantarfasciitis
• piriformis syndrome
• TMJ/TMD
• neck/shoulder pain
• scoliosis

Those suffering from SMA lose their ability to release and relax muscles and move freely. Clinical Essential Somatics is taught in 1:1 session with hands on work with the practitioner, focusing on the clients patterns of restricted movement and SMA. Groups classes, are weekly classes that teach Somatic movements and are suitable for those new to Somatics and those whom have undertaken clinical sessions.

'Essential Somatics' builds on the work of Thomas Hanna (Hanna Somtics), as well as bringing in the work of new pioneers in the field of Somatic Movement.

Do you lean to one side? 🤔

Perhaps you have a habit of sitting with your feet up to one side and always the same way, or have a job where you carry things more on one side if your body.

These habits, can lead us to developing movement patterns that might restricted us from doing things we want to do or lead to chronic muscles tension that may lead to pain.

This is great seated sequence you can do anytime at your desk or even standing to help find that still point in your body where you feel relaxed and balanced, reducing tension and giving you more movement opportunities.

Give it a try let me know how you get on!

I cannot not speak out anymore, and I have friends that work in the NHS and have done for many years, saying the same thing, who are themselves broken by the system.

No matter what we have been through with my Dad, and this isn’t our first rodeo, it breaks my heart to think of the people that don’t have anyone to advocate for them. That don’t understand or know the questions to ask.

And that pains me more than anything else we have been through!

Audio on! 🔉

So many people comment on their shoulder being up by their ears. Sometimes both,
sometimes one dominates. This might be associated with pain, tension, stiffness, stress, worry, anxiety or restricted movement.

Often we try to force the shoulder down, but how about learning and retaining your nervous systems to let them relax and learn how it feels for your shoulders to be relaxed.

This can be combined also with any of the other next and shoulder reels on here.

Always a breath in to gently contract, a breath out to release slowly, and then a resting breath before going again.

This can be used throughout the day to help reset back to finding comfort and ease. The more often you do the easier relaxing your shoulder will become.

Save and share, and let me know how you get on!

Part 2

The bu****it around the stories of pain would make my life so easier!

As humans we what definitives, we want answers, and answer that make sense. But you know that not the case. We don’t have the answer, and honestly if you are given a clear definitive answer that really fits with your beliefs and narratives it’s likely not 💯 accurate. Even if you do feel better afterwards.

I have patients nowadays that I don’t even touch, and guess what they get better, and their pain can reduced even I the hour I am with them.

But my god, do I g things the old way, with the old narratives would make my life so much easier, but you know what I think humanity deserves better.

So here I am in my little corner, trying to do that!

Part 1

My journey as a confused chiropractor!

Years of things not making sense, and yet patients getting better.

Doubting myself, not wanting to speak up because clearly it was me that just didn’t get it.

And then I discovers that everything I thought all of my doubts and questions were right!

I was in part relived and in part even more confused.

I have spent the last 10 years on a journey of reframing how I what, why it helps, why it doesn’t help, why everything possibly helps and why nothing possibly helps.

And the journey is far from over because day in and day out those of us that strive to be evidence based to be less wrong to figure out the big picture of pain are met with a daily, sole destroying barrage of bu****it on social media peddling miss-information that might sound plausible and might help your pain but not for the reasons you are being told.

Now for watch part 2!!

So this is a simple Somatic movement to help with the pain I have on the right side of my low back.

Using rotation as my check in point to see how the movement feels in terms of any pain etc and what the range is.

Then moving into the side bends, again seeing how it feels each direction and the starting my sequence by moving into the pain free direction.

3 repetitions of pandiculation so a gentle contraction of the muscle, followed by a slow release and then a relaxing breath.

Checking the rotation again before going the other way, and you can see how my range of movement improves with each stage.

Nothing should be forced or painful, moving with ease to retrain the muscles to help it to relax.

One to save and try particularly for pain that is more to the side of the body whether that’s upper or lower back.

Or just to improve rotation even when pain free!

You don’t have to be in pain to move better!!

Let me know how you get on.
