The Truth About Safety in Wilderness Programs

Wilderness programs are often portrayed as risky or extreme, especially for young people—but the data tells a very different story. In reality, these programs are among the safest places a youth can be. While the idea of the outdoors can feel scary to families, that fear has been amplified by misinformation, not evidence. When you look at the facts, wilderness therapy stands out as a model of structure, supervision, and safety.

Comfort Isn’t the Same as Growth

True growth requires challenge, and without it, resilience fades. While no generation likes to say “it was tougher back then,” the reality is that constant convenience, largely driven by the rapid adoption of technology, has softened many of life’s natural challenges. As technology increasingly removes friction from everyday experiences, we risk losing the discomfort that builds strength, perseverance, and adaptability. This reflection invites us to reconsider whether ease is always serving us—or quietly holding us back.

This week, our students were busy doing science—testing, experimenting, and exploring concepts through hands-on experiences. We know that learning doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some students thrive with auditory instruction, while others truly shine when they can touch, build, and test in real time.

By engaging multiple learning styles—especially tactile and experiential learning—our teachers create opportunities for more students to understand, retain, and feel confident in what they’re learning. For so many of our students, hands-on learning isn’t just helpful… It’s essential.

Tony Mosier, COO - Why is it called The Carter House?

Carter House is a small, specialized program with individualized lengths of stay for adolescent boys who are struggling to fully commit to sobriety. Students meet Telos admissions criteria but are at risk of undermining treatment due to an underaddressed substance use issue.

The program is named in honor of Carter Beradi, a former Telos student whose kindness, humor, and ability to connect with others left a lasting impact. Carter was navigating both mental health challenges and emerging addictive thinking—often caught between systems that treated those issues separately. After treatment, he returned home, but later relapsed and tragically lost his life to fentanyl poisoning.

Carter House exists so that other young men do not fall into that same gap. It reflects Telos’ commitment to treating mental health and substance use together, with structure, accountability, and compassion. More than a name, Carter House is a reminder of why this work matters—and a promise to intervene earlier, support more fully, and help students build a safer, more sustainable future.
