Summer School on Stress Conference The 2015 Summer School on Stress is an interactive educational experience hosted by internationally known experts and investigators in Grenoble, France. O.

The 2015 Summer School on Stress will be held in Grenoble, France at Clinique Universitaire d'Hépato-Gastroentérologie and Grenoble Institute of Neuroscience (GIN, INSERM U836), CHU de Grenoble from June 29th, 2015 - July 2nd, 2015. Accreditation is provided the University of California-Irvine School of Medicine, California, USA. The presenting faculty are all former PhD students of Hans Selye, the ‘father of biologic stress’; hence the school is very authentic, free of frequent distortions & over-implications of stress. It is comprehensive & interactive since it covers virtually all aspects of stress, based in part by oral or poster presentations of participants. Course goals: to better understand the concept of biologic stress, its manifestations, mechanisms & its pharmacologic ramifications (e.g., the anti-inflammatory & immune-modulating actions of glucocorticoids & the possibility of drug-interventions in severe distress), & to learn new avoidance, management & coping strategies. Certificate of attendance will be provided! Main topics:
• The origins of stress concept & the seminal discoveries of Hans Selye
• What is stress, what is not
• Stress: distress vs. eustress & transtress – similarities in the adrenal glands, big difference in the brain
• The neuroendocrine mechanisms of stress; physiologic & pharmacologic actions of glucocorticoids
• Effect of stress on immune response & its role in the mechanisms of various diseases
• Stress & structural GI diseases, e.g., gastro-duodenal ulcers, IBD (inflammatory bowel diseases)
• Stress & functional GI disorders, e.g., motility disorders, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
• PTSD & organ systems involved in biologic stress
• Management strategies for stress: Pharmacologic interventions and/or life style changes
• My good & bad experience with stress: Challenges & lessons learned (Short, oral or poster presentations by attendees)
• Stress in our daily lives – from distress to eustress: Open forum with participation of all registered attendees

Abstracts submission (for oral or poster presentation): Abstracts should be sent to Prof. Zayachkivska ozayachkivska@gmail.com before the deadline of May 15, 2015. Authors of submitted abstracts get 30 euros discount (enter Abstract2015 code at checkout!)

Registration fee (includes access to all presentations Monday-Friday, course material, lunch, coffee breaks, welcome reception & one group dinner & one sight-seeing tour): 150 euros for undergraduate students; 200 euros for PhD students ; 300 euros for others. Our special prices for hotel rooms in Grenoble are 80-150 euros. Please register at our website: www.stresseducation.org

GET TO KNOW THE COURSE DIRECTORS! Here is some information and brief bio's on the amazing course directors who are running the Summer School on Stress Conference:

The course directors are the last 3 PhD students/graduates of Dr. Hans Selye who was professor & had laboratories at McGill University that was upgraded to an Institute at the University of Montreal. He had 40 PhD students (the most famous is the Nobel Laureate Roger Guillemin who received the award for the discovery of hypothalamic releasing hormones) & Drs. Somogyi (the 38th Selye graduate), Szabo (39th) & Tache (40th) studied & worked at the Selye’s Institute in the 1970s:
-Prof. Dr. Dr. (h.c.) Arpad Somogyi, former head of the European equivalent of FDA in Brussels, is presently at the Life Sciences Institute in Berlin.
-Yvette Tache, PhD, Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA & Co-Director, Center for Neurobiology of Stress & Women's Health VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
-Sandor Szabo, MD, PhD, MPH, DSc (h.c.), Professor of Pathology & Pharmacology, Director, Hans Selye Academic Society at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, & Visiting Professor at Semmelweis University Medical School, Budapest.
All three are internationally known investigators in the field of drug metabolism, toxicology, cancerogenesis (Somogyi), role of stress, esp., maternal stress in gastrointestinal diseases, especially IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) (Tache) & development, prevention & new therapy of gastroduodenal ulcers as well as of IBD (inflammatory bowel diseases), like ulcerative colitis & Crohn’s diseases (Szabo). They are also active promoters of modern educational techniques like interactive, small group teaching & ‘flip classroom’ methods. They also organized (alone & in collaboration with others) numerous research symposia & scientific conferences all over the world.
