We attended the HMC (The Heads' Conference) in Newport earlier this month to share our cardiac screening initiative, designed to open doors for schools and sports clubs without an affiliated ECG technician to carry out in-house 12-lead ECG tests.

We’re delighted to have Professor Aneil Malhotra on board to report on these ECGs. Professor Malhotra also joined us at the conference to speak about the critical importance of cardiac screening in young people.

Why ECG screening is important:
❗12 young people die every week in the UK from undiagnosed cardiac conditions.
❗ 80% show no symptoms beforehand.
❗ A simple 10-second ECG can help identify hidden risks early.
❗ 1 in ~260 people have a potentially life-threatening condition highlighted in an ECG test.

How this innovation is opening doors:
✅ The pre-positioned electrode patch allows anyone to easily record a 12-lead ECG from the centre of the chest - no medical training required.
✅ The compact device enables on-site testing anywhere, removing the need to travel.
✅ Each ECG is analysed by a Cardiologist, with a detailed report returned a week later.

Elite clubs have access to cardiac screening… but what about teams lower down?

When one of our employee’s teammates at York City Ladies Football Club collapsed on the pitch last year with an undiagnosed heart condition, it raised a question for us: what screening options really exist across different football tiers?

The reality is that cardiac screening is difficult to access for most clubs unless they’re classed as ‘elite’.

At CardioLogic, we’ve been working to change that – bringing practical solutions to grassroots football. And this week, we took another big step forward! 🔥

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of training the Birmingham County FA on their brand-new 12-lead ECG device – and what a fantastic team they are. We’re delighted to welcome them to this cardiac screening initiative, following on from North Riding County Football Association. 🎉

For those unfamiliar, the device uses a pre-positioned electrode patch that sticks centrally to the chest. It can be applied by anyone – no medical training required. In fact, the Birmingham staff administered it themselves for the very first time yesterday. Results are then sent securely to our cardiologists via the cloud, with reports returned within a week.

This technology is a genuine game-changer – not just for football, but for any sport or organisation without medical professionals on-site.

We’re excited to be part of this initiative and can’t wait to see it grow across more counties, sports, and schools. Next week, we’ll also be at the HMC (The Heads’ Conference) to share this innovation with the education sector.

How it all started... ❤️⚽

In September, our Medical Device Specialist, Faye Singleton, witnessed her teammate Summer from York City Ladies Football Club collapse during a match against Middlesbrough FC Women. Summer was later diagnosed with a heart condition that she had no prior symptoms of.

We began looking into the disparity in cardiac screening across the FA Women’s National League (Tier 4) and grassroots football. The gap between lower-league players, especially females, and those at the elite level was striking.

We knew we had to do something to help close that gap.

Thanks to the support of North Riding County Football Association, and with the game-changing PCA500 device by QT Medical - a portable, medical-grade 12-lead ECG that can be used by non-medical staff - we launched a screening initiative focused on accessibility, affordability, and prevention.

💥 Easy to use and compact enough to travel anywhere
⚽ Now in use at York City Ladies – the first football club in the UK to adopt it
✅ Used by UK Athletics
👏 Rolled out to grassroots teams via North Riding FA

Most importantly, Faye’s teammate Summer is recovering well - and now bravely sharing her experience to raise awareness of the importance of heart screening in sport.

BBC Look North visited York City Ladies recently to see it in action and share the story. Watch the clip below to see how this small device is already making a big impact.

We are now working hard to continue expanding this initiative to more and more young people across the UK who otherwise would not have easy access to screening. This device makes that possible.
