Personal turnout...

💖 Personal turnout is a term I like to use so my dancers know that they all have unique factors that determine their range of turnout. And that it's ok!

Another harsh truth... 🤷🏻‍♀️ Consistent technique can’t happen if attendance isn’t taken seriously.

Let's summarize ⬇️

🍎 "Dancers’ energy demands fluctuate across the season, so they should adapt their nutrition to match their training schedule" (Ambegaonkar & Brown, 2021).
🥑 “Perhaps because their bodies are the medium, they're at high risk for body dissatisfaction, especially if they believe their appearance does not meet the cultural ideal" (Kartawidjaja & Cordero, 2013).
⚠️ “Dancers often obtain dietary advice from sources that are not credible, and take recommendations from celebrities & word of mouth" (IADMS Resource Paper).

👉 I admire the overall message these three send because they focus on food confidence, body confidence, & non-diet approaches (very refreshing for the dance world).

Beach Ball 😍

🩷 Imagine holding a beach ball that’s wide and round
🩷 Can be used for any rounded arm in dance
🩷 Can also be practiced holding a fitness circle (since it’s similarly shaped to a beach ball)

Words carry weight 🗣⬇️

Quick Summary
🧠 Labels can be harmful, such as ‘bad turnout’
🧠 I don’t like placing my students in a ‘box’ because they should always feel like they have the capacity to improve
🧠 Our dance ability has nothing to do with our worth as humans
🧠 I try hard to remove the word don’t
🧠 Instead of “Perfect” - I use excellent
🧠 Ballet Body - I’ve removed this word completely
🧠 Instead of “Movement Dysfunction” - I now use the terms optimal vs. less optimal

Front développés 😀

✔️ Heel to sky like there’s a cup of tea on it
✔️ pass through baby attitude with knee open

I’ll keep it simple as usual ⬇️🏋️‍♀️

🩰 We're in an era of change. Just take a step back & think about how much their movements have changed in the last 20 years. We see more:
💡 Extreme ranges of turnout
💡 Extreme ranges of motion/flexibility
💡 Higher Leg Heights
💡 More turns
💡 More acrobatic skills blended

❣️This means we HAVE to adjust their training. Research says:
💪”The physical demands on dancers from choreography makes their fitness just as important as skill development” (Koutedakis & Jamurtas, 2004).
💪 “Even at the height of their careers, dancers’ aerobic power, strength, bone & joint integrity are the ‘Achilles heels’ of the dance-only selection training” (Koutedakis & Jamurtas, 2004).
💪”This reflects the unfounded view, shared by sections of the dance world, that training not related to dance diminishes their aesthetics” (Koutedakis & Jamurtas, 2004).
💪”Given that dance elicits only limited stimuli for fitness adaptations, it's not surprising that professionals demonstrate values similar to healthy sedentary individuals” (Koutedakis & Jamurtas, 2004).

🗣️📋 One of my favorite podcasts on this is by (Episode 94: In Season Cross-Training) where they discuss Alvin Ailey dancers & how they adjusted their schedule to allow for cross-training.
