Dress in Blue Day is part of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and helps remind us how important colorectal cancer screening is for early detection and prevention.

Screenings save lives. In fact, many colorectal cancers can be prevented when precancerous polyps are found and removed early.

The American Cancer Society recommends starting screening at age 45 for those at average risk. If you have a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors, your provider may recommend screening even earlier.

Cabin Creek Health Systems was built by the community, for the community, in a very literal sense.
In the early 1970s, more than six thousand people lived along Cabin Creek with access to just one physician. The fear of mine accidents, combined with the near-impossibility of receiving timely medical care, drove the community to action. Miners and their families banded together and raised funds to build a clinic, initially through yard sales, bake sales and door-to-door canvasing. Volunteers cleared the land. Board members personally borrowed money from the UMWA Federal Credit Union to make construction possible.
With additional help from grants and the Yale School of Architecture, what they built from that grassroots effort is now a system serving 21-thousand people across six primary care clinics, three dental clinics and seven school-based health centers. The hands that dug the coal helped build the clinic that started Cabin Creek Health Systems.
