Our Story

This is Charlie Pop Designs, named after my daughter's nickname from Charlotte Poppy and whom has taught me more about myself and life than anything or anyone else in my (almost) 39 years. Before I had children, I studied as much as I could, travelled the world and worked in exciting places. I volunteered my time and money so that I was always putting something positive out to balance up, what seemed to be, such an unfair and cruel world. I met some amazing people in third world countries and saw how people lived with their families. I promised myself that I would live my life in a way that would make a positive impact, no matter how small.

Even when my daughter came along in 2011, it was still easy to volunteer my time, with baby on hip or in sling I went, giving money and volunteering time to organisations that made a difference, I have also donated blood, Plasma and even my own eggs to give the gift of Motherhood and family to a woman whose choice to have a child was so cruelly taken away from her (with her own eggs anyway) due to medical complications.

However just after my son was born and my daughter turned 3, we noticed something undeniably wrong with her. We had concerns since birth but hindsight is 20:20! and she was our first child so we didn’t quite know what exactly was ‘typical’. After many tests, reports, scans and specialists, my beautiful, shy, fragile little girl, who was still yet to say her first word, was diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome, Autism spectrum Disorder, an intellectual disability and Sensory Processing Disorder. With a child diagnosed with all these syndromes and disorders plus a newborn baby boy, I knew that my life had to change, DRAMATICALLY!

By this stage it was so apparent, she stopped eating, we couldn’t get her out of bed, let alone outside. She wasn’t speaking and coudn’t understand us, she was sensitive to every noise, some sensations and textures but she did not feel pain at the same time, which was very perplexing and quite dangerous. I turned my home into a therapy centre with picture boards and started learning basic sign language, so we could communicate with her. I threw myself into studying different kinds of therapies and used them daily with her alongside her “team” of therapists, specialists and paediatrician. There were forms after forms after forms to be filled, appointments and therapies to attend, research to be done, books to read and she required help with every single little thing! I had to start learning how to help my daughter but it cost us every cent of our savings! Our budget got tighter and tighter, all our savings had long gone, along with every funding grant I could apply for and credit cards maxed out to give her the best early intervention therapy possible. Even as I write this in January 2018, we are still about 6-8 months away until the NDIS kicks in!

She improved greatly with the intensive therapy regime I have her in and I love my kid’s so deeply and so hard it hurts, and I wouldn’t change them for the world but this is not how I planned my life. I never envisioned being a stay at home Mum at all, let alone a stay at home full time carer to a child with special needs!

My children teach me far more about life than what I ever learned at uni and travelling the globe but I am a creative, passionate person and I felt as though I had lost my identity. I was also so sick of living below the poverty line, budgeting every cent, seeing my husband 1 day a week while he worked his guts out from dawn to dusk 6 days. I would try to make a bit of money here and there so my husband could stress a little less about our finances and just maybe, one day he will only have to work the one Full time job!

After living in 5th gear for so long, full steam ahead trying anything and everything to help Charlotte as well as care for my son and give him a ‘typical’ childhood, I fell into a depression. Life is unfair! There was little to no time to live the life that I was so passionate about and every cent was spent on therapies, education, equipment and sensory items and clothing that may or may not help.

I really needed a passion, outside of my marriage, my children, therapies, paediatricians, genetic counselling and the mass amount of paperwork that needs to be filled on behalf of a child with disablities. I adore my family, my kid;s are beautiful and smart and my husband supports me in everything I choose to do!

And speaking of passions & love of products that are truly special, I happened upon Life without Limitations Foundation and their unique, beautiful 3D beaded artwork! And as soon as I saw that they were creating jobs, feeding, caring for the children and paying them a descent wage to make their art to sell over in Australia to bring in even more women and children fleeing violence and extreme poverty with their young children and babies, I was hooked! 1 art piece sold in Australia helps a minimum of 3 people over there! I knew it was for me! I could follow my passion of helping people and just maybe make a little commission to help my own family.

I became an ambassador for the Foundation because I am passionate about helping people, it's who I am! I get lost and can get quite depressed if I feel like I am not contributing to a better world. LWLF gave me my purpose. I am able to contribute positively by helping change lives despite being on a carer's pension and on the poverty line myself. While I am finding fulfillment in what I feel is my purpose in life, and the more pieces of Art I can sell, not only helps the foundation bring in more women and children but can also help me to earn a bit of an income at the same time which could pay for Charlotte’s expensive therapy, equipment or even just nappies (which are soooo expensive for an almost 7 yr old!). I love that I made the connection of being able to be a force of good again while helping our own financial situation at the same time! And to continue being 'on call' to both my children.
